I say yes. Han has always been the better character by far. More fun and entertaining. That's why they chose him over Luke to be the main "old cast" character to put with the new cast in TFA.

They didn't have to turn him into the shittiest father in the galaxy and undo all of the growth and development his character experienced in eps. IV - XI.

They could have had him and Leia together and had Poe discover the faction of the Empire that was still remaining while also having Luke training Jedi when Kylo turned. It could have all happened where they were together and it would have been a great way to introduce the new characters. Real wasted opportunity, honestly.

Shows that Rian really wasn't thinking things through with this script.

I don't know how you do it with a billion dollar franchise, but this SW trilogy wasn't thought out at all.

I have a suspicion that after TLJ they had a come to Jesus meeting with him and pointed out that part of his contract was doing press and what not. Talking about how the movie sucked a dick was violating the terms of that agreement.

Which he had been doing left and right. My favorite Hamill comment being when he was asked what he thought of TLJ and Hamill replied with "It's the longest of the Star Wars movies."

Well that time he was contracted for is now up and he can kick them in the balls if he wants to.

It seems like he wants to. I could not be happier to see him get a running start and kick them right in the daddybags.

Maybe Rian was going with the snarky comedy angle and was going to have CP3O turn to Luke as he walked by and say "What, you think you're better than me?"

They killed Star Wars.

Re-name that abortion of a movie.

Eta they should have named it something else, but they wanted honest people's money.

If you would have told me as a kid that they'd make sequels to the OT and that Han, Luke, and Leia are never together, Luke never fights, he gives up on his nephew, Luke and Han die, and that there aren't 100s of new Jedi, I would have said why bother?

Rey should not have been able to best Kylo regardless if he was injured or not. The saber coming to Rey should have been when Luke entered the film. That would have been a bad arse entrance. They could have at least reunited the big 3 in a de-aged flashback.

It's pretty clear something like this happened. He was initially talking shite about it, then suddenly stopped. Now he's back. I'm loving it.

You thought calling people out would be limited to your safe space?

Why?

JJ likely had a coherent plan for the trilogy.

Even if he did, in hindsight, The Force Awakens is what set the wheels of Episode VIII's ultimate failure into motion. The world Abrams and Kasdan introduced in Episode VII made very little sense considering the ending to Return of the Jedi.

Why isn't the Republic actively fighting the First Order?

Where did the First Order come from?

Why did Han Solo's character revert completely back to what it was in Episode IV?

Why is there a Resistance when there is a Republic and the First Order is simply an insurgent group?

And those are just the big questions. There are other, smaller things done in The Force Awakens that don't make any sense whatsoever.

"Hamill continued this thought by stating: “Luke, Han and Leia will never be together again"

This quote by him is such a shame. Leia is gone, there is no redoing what they had access to in that first film. As far as I am concerned, it's a total shame these three never got the chance to unite as a group.

I don't know what JJ's original plan was, but he's ultimately to blame for this.

Everyone knew Harrison Ford was only going to do 1 film, and that was the film that Han Solo dies in. We, as fans of a movie series 40+ years old, wanted to see the old gang together one more time.
They couldn't do it for a prequel, but this time, they had a sequel. They had the chance. Let Luke and Han say goodbye. Hell, let Chewie go down with Han, the way it was meant to be.

Now, Star Wars as we knew it is gone forever. Han is gone, Luke is apparently gone, and Carrie Fisher is dead so Leia's out too.

They've made a "sequel" series with X Wings and Tie Fighters, and somebody has a lightsaber, and someone else has the Millennium Falcon with a graying Chewie. But it's not Star Wars.

I do have a problem blaming JJ for this. He had that epic closing shot in mind, and it just got shite on. I’m sure he wrestled with it, but then just decided it would be best to save Luke for the sequel.

JJ should have been the Kevin Fiege of the Star Wars universe. I think JJ is a mediocre director but a fantastic producer. I just wish he’d get out of directing and do what he was really good at.

The goal of The Force Awakens was to set up the new trilogy. That’s why there were so many questions. The problem is that only works as party of a story arc that will play out going forward and will hopefully tie everything together. Unfortunately Rian Johnson fricked it all up.

Still grinds my gears how they treated Luke Skywalker, who was arguably one the best heroes in cinema history. As someone said earlier, he (and Han & Leia) were nothing but a hook to get the audience. However even then they fricked it up. They had a chance to kill Leia & give her a meaningful death while saving one more character for the final movie. They had a year to reshoot a few scenes and make some edits. Even with that lead time, they still managed to paint themselves into a corner
