The Force Awakens was great. Classic Hero’s Journey but with added layers of depth rarely seen in the same archetypal story we are used to. Han fricking Solo was the mentor figure for God’s sake. You can’t tell me that’s not on par with a very flat Obi-Wan from ANH or Qui-Gon from APM. TFA was a perfect reset. Had it properly been built upon with TLJ, you’d be absolutely fine with TFA.
My biggest gripe with TFA is that I absolutely do not care about the villain. I actually get disgusted looking at his face (and not in a good way). I'm only neutral to Rey and don't care about her at all.
Was very excited to see the old cast back because they were properly built up in the OT. Not like the new cast which were forced down the audience's throat.

Kylo was the worst part of TFA
He was the only good thing in TLJ

My main issue with this trilogy is the first order v the resistance. It's just a rehash of the OT. It's like c'mon guys, come up with something different.

Agreed. The first order also seems a lot smaller and a lot less threatening.
And they turned General Hux into a buffoon.

No way. The Father is the balance, Sidious in no way represents balance.
Agreed, which means Anakin has to take his place.
I welcome such an ending. Would definitely blow away the turds we've seen so far.

Rose Tico killed in the first scene
I’d like to see her go out the same way Dooku did in 3.

The ending scene is Mortis. Sidious is the father. Rey is the daughter. Kylo is the Son. Anakin somehow reincarnates and much like the Altar of Mortis episode must restore the balance. EXACT SAME STORYLINE.
Hope not. I love the Morris trilogy but would hate this. I think if they go something that route, it’ll just be more like Luke and the light side of the force world people battling palpatine in the force world. Either way, not a fan. I’m excited to see palpatine as he is just a great character, but my hopes for where they take the story with it are not high.

All three of the OT heroes are failures.
Leia failed to stop the spread of the empire/first order
Luke failed to expand the Jedi
Han became a space hobo yearning for the good ol days
They all stink

I’m willing to bet that at least a 1/3 of the people were there for that movie just to make sure they don’t miss anything important for Endgame. It’s why I went at least. Everyone is obsessed where they’re going to take Endgame.
No one gives a frick where they take it after TLJ. TLJ made 1.3 billion and more than a third of that was opening weekend. I’m feeling good in it making somewhere around the 800-900 million dollar range.

I say this with full knowledge that SW is completely fiction and TLJ has already made major changes to the universe but I don’t think there is a precedent for dark side force ghost. I think Darth Bane, whom Yoda has dealings with, made a postmortem appearance but he was in a holocron or part of a force nexus. Sith are about preserving physical life. Poppa Palpatine likely learned from Plageus’ mistakes and continued living even after the events of RotJ.

Retroactive continuity. Means changing the timeline.

I see what you are saying and I agree.
Looking back on it, the real failure came with TFA and its desire to do a soft re-boot/remake of ANH. It's been 30 years since the events of ROTJ and you jump us right into a civil war with no explanation as to how we got there. The Battle of Endor seemed pretty decisive. How did the First Order come to be? Why was the New Republic so weak? Why was there a group called the Resistance when the New Republic was no friends of the First Order? Why were the New Republic and the Resistance so at odds when it came to dealing with the First Order?
These are simple world-building questions that Abrams and Kasdan completely ignored when writing their screenplay for TFA.

Mon Mothma. She’s to blame with her rush to reduce the military by 90%. It’s in the canon novels which I understand do nothing to help the films.

That's just it. It is Disney's business model to make you buy shite in order to understand "their scope"
You wanna know why the setting is the way it is? Buy our 3 volume tome.
That leads to shitty, rushed movie making. frick that.
Movies are not books. Show me, don't tell me.

Exactly. They won the fight against the empire. What the hell happened?
They should’ve flipped the table where the First Order was the Resistance against a Leia led republic that was falling apart.
