The new season premiered on Paramount+ today with the first episode of the season. It definitely had the strange new worlds vibe going for it.

I liked it overall, only thing that I had issue with is that when they discovered that the storm sent them to the Sol system they never questioned how or why it was just ok we are here. Also (not that its a bad thing) this episode felt fairly independent from a season long plot line kind of like some TNG episodes or voyager would do.

TNG and Voyager were episodic, not serialized. The vast majority of their episodes were either completely standalone or had very loose connective tissue between them; DS9 was the only one that had season-long story arcs out of the 5 original series (TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY) - SNW falls more in line with this type of storytelling usually, probably more closely resembling Voyager's story-structure (loose connective tissue) than TNG's "reset to status quo" after nearly every episode. Definitely not as tied together as DS9 was during the Dominion War.

That’s true, and you’re right I don’t think it was a bad thing. I have no doubt the season long arc starts in the 2nd episode. People were saying it needed to be more about strange new worlds and that’s what we got with this episode. I’m pretty sure it was mentioned at least twice about exploring strange new worlds.

I gave up on this a few seasons ago. I may try it again.

Besides season 3 of Picard, Strange New Worlds is the best thing Star Trek related on Paramount+.

This show is so fricking awesome. Pike quoting Edgar Rice Burroughs. Excellent.

This is one of the better episodes of the show. Hoping it’s a sign that they listened to the complaints about season 3.

Loved this episode as well. It felt like old school Star Trek of the captain being caught in a moral dilemma (in this case allowing one species to die to save humanity)

IMO episode 2 is better than the first, if you like Event Horizon you should enjoy this episode.

I’m not a horror or torture fan, so someone who’s into that stuff will have to tell me if this is a good episode. Not a dig on anyone, it’s just not my thing so I can’t tell.

Curious to see if this changes Spock more towards his Original Series persona.

It’s Star Trek level of horror, so it’s not that bad. You’re missing out a great episode.

I’ve enjoyed both episodes. They feel like TNG standalone episodes. Wonder if there will be a season long arc this season since the first two were standalone episodes.

This. I love a good ghost ship episode and this was easily one of my favorites.

Episode 3 on the other hand was a complete clunker. Total filler and Ortegas and Scottie just aren’t that interesting on this show.

I actually like Scottie on the show, but not Ortegas. I keep wondering why she gets the screen time she does. Really not a great character.

This episode was a waste of time. I get that original Star Trek had its share of goofiness, but that was with seasons of more than 20 episodes. SNW has less than 20 episodes left in its run. So we have this and the Muppet episode this season to cringe our way through while the clock is ticking…

I struggle to find one thing good about this episode. It might be the worst in the whole run. Might.

I think this is a common and understandable constant critique of the show. I don’t mind the occasional filler, goofy Star Trek episode every once in a while. They all have them. But as you mentioned, seasons just aren’t that long anymore and SNW leans on them a little too much considering how few episodes they actually make. At this point it feels like it’s 1/4 of all their episodes.

I enjoyed Episode 3 well enough. Not their best "fun" episode, but decent. High Pike stole the show.

While Ortegas doesn't have the most interesting back-story, the actress is more expressive and fun than most of the other actors. They wrapped up her war with Scotty way too soon, but if there are Ortegas haters, I guess this is good for them.

I would've preferred a buffer episode between the torture ship and pleasure planet episodes. After thinking about it a few days, I guess it was an opportunity for Spock and Kirk to work out their PTSD together, but while watching Ep 3 it felt like the show had slingshotted from the dark end of the drama spectrum into light comedy.

Ortegas and Scottie

Ortega has grown on me even though she is apparently superhuman after surviving a mortal wound earlier in the series. I’ve always liked Scottie in this series.
