I think that ending could have been cool with more set up time.
The only problem I have with that ending (tough I appreciate it at least making Bran semi worth something) is that if that's the case, then why kill the other NK? If there has to be a NK/NQ, why kill one just to create another? Why does the first NK need to kill the 3ER?

ETA: Oh Sorry. You're talking about that first one. It was in this thread. That seems doubtful at this point TBH

I guess there has to be a cycle. The other NK had to be killed to stop the Others from winning and tipping the balance in their favor. I guess the Others are a force of nature that keep humanity in check. It would make more sense for Bran’s purpose to be for this than just him taking the throne.
Also I think regardless of how it ends Jon will take the black. Because he would be the 1000th LC (not 999th or 1005th) so it seems symbolic. The only way him taking the black makes sense is by this storyline though.

Honestly, if the NK is still a thing even after the long night then Bran becoming King of Westeros is logical.
Bran is as south as possible and the NK and army of the dead would have to battle through literally all of Westeros to kill Bran and "erase mankind".

I can’t find that on r/freefolk so it seems to not be widespread. But only in that scenario does Jon taking the black and Bran becoming king make sense.

By Jon taking the black he’ll technically not be eligible for the throne anymore. So maybe that’s how they’ll explain it since there’s no need for the Nights Watch anymore.

but again, there's no more need for the NW, so taking the black to be on the NW again just doesn't make any sense.
but i'm sure they'll spin it with Bran making some commentary about how there will always be a threat beyond the north.

Bran tells Jon about Dragonglass’ ability to resurrect the dead (think Benjen.) Bran continues to tell Jon about the seasons in Westeros and how there always needs to be a Night King/Queen to maintain balance. Jon stabs Dany through the heart with Dragonglass. He sees her eyes go blue. Bran wargs into Drogon and carries Dany beyond the wall. Dany is taken to the same forest we see in the very first episode. Jon joins the Night’s Watch as the 1000th Lord Commander. He and Dany meet from time to time (this may have been foreshadowed, remember “we could spend 1,000 years here and no one would notice?”), paralleling the Night Queen and the 13th Lord Commander, who was a Stark. The final scene is narrated by Bran with a flashback about the 13th Lord Commander and his lover, the Night Queen, who is now Dany. Dany is animated by Ice, Jon is animated by Fire (confirmed by GRR Martin via Beric.) This is ironic since Dany, as a Targaryen, is Fire, and Jon is both a Targaryen and a Stark, literally Ice and Fire. Both are dead but re-animated with their consciousness’ intact. Jon and Dany’s story, their tragedy, is “A Song of Ice & Fire.”
So John goes to Castle Black to occasionally hook up with his dead, evil aunt who he was grossed out about making out with when she was alive? awesome
