Yeah this is the first time I felt like Holland’s Spidey would actually have a chance against Tobey’s, who had always had the best hands of any of them.

There was a Marvel Superheroes board game way back when and they mapped out the powers of the different characters. There are some power tiers for strength and speed where Spider-Man ranks very high. He's clearly not at the top tier (something like. Hulk, Thor, Thing, Ghost Rider, Namor, WonderMan or Samson). But he's many times more powerful than peak human strength. Depending on the writing it means he can lift between 10 and 25 tons. His speed isn't Superman or Flash level but it is also many times the peak human potential making him fast enough to evade bullets at point blank range and watch arrows go by as if in slow motion.

Writers often power him down substantially since a punch with less than 10% of his strength would decapitate Dr Octopus and fights against street level criminals would really resemble Fedor beating up a five year old boy. A lot of his rogues gallery opponents are similar to the lower tier of his abilities without training or enhancement.

Writers have to be careful with the power creep problem really. His most relatable characteristics are being naive but smart and idealistic. Whenever he grows up he kinda risks becoming too overpowered and further away from the mid to late teens Spiderman he's arguably most beloved for being. He's roughly supposed to be Shazam in age, Superman in ideals, and Batman in his opponents.

Supposed to be a top tier mutant. The way they handled her is definitely a good sign.

As much as I loved this one…

I do hope they return to some more traditional Spidey villains in the next couple. Maybe Kingpin+Hobgoblin (that isn’t Ned.) Then a Kraven/Venom in the final one like the Spider Man 2 game.

I’m assuming Sony doesn’t want them to do MCU versions of Green Goblin, Doc Ock or Lizard or even Electro. Or maybe Feige just wants Holland’s version to fight some different battles and do different things. But there’s still some solid options and I think Sony would let them do Venom again since that was their plan all along

This movie was awesome. Not only one of the best Spiderman movies but one of the best movies I've ever seen.

I am a little surprised at people saying it is the best TH Spidey, but to each his own. I enjoyed it, BUT I have two pretty major issues. I get the suspension of disbelief idea , especially for a superhero movie, but some things are just too much for me.
Jean Grey did some straight up evil stuff in general, and to Peter specifically. Her and her sis invading people’s minds and giggling about it hit me as way wrong before anything bad happened to them. How many deaths is Jean responsible for, and not just Damage Control baddies either? She straight up threw MJ off a roof and killed a guy by stepping him in front of a car right in front of Peter. She let Hulk off the leash in the middle of the city. I legit felt bad for Scorpion as she was mind raping him into some added charges, not to mention the lady in the tank. The writers did the character no favors. Everyone would have good reason to fear her, not just because she has powers, but because of how she chooses to use them. Keeping Peter alive was a good turn, but she has a lot to answer for.
After Peter takes the bullet, are we really supposed to believe that his identity wouldn’t be compromised? Doctors, nurses and hospital staff have seen his face. Frank standing guard is nice and all, but come on. For that matter, isn’t Punisher wanted for all the mayhem he has caused?

Some things that I really liked: The portrayal of the toll that being Spider-man takes on Pete was VERY well done. Spider-man 2 with Maguire and this film really make you feel for Peter. I also liked the way they had him use his webbing, agility and acrobatics. This was easily the best version of Spidey doing Spidey things. Several moments where I found myself thinking that how he used his webbing was clever.

Some things that were confusing: Is MIT in NYC now, or did I miss something about MJ and Ned moving back?
Was the idea of accepting that he didn’t have to go it alone a “cure” for his further mutation? That seems a little too corny. I really thought they were going to go the Man-spider route at least somewhat. In the end fight against the Hand, he just takes off his inhibitor, goes beast mode, and nothing gets mentioned again.
Am I supposed to believe that the Damage Control guy did all this mutant research on his own? Do Peter and Jean buy that?
Are there now different versions of the Hulk in Banner? Why did Banner need his inhibitor at all after becoming professor Hulk from Endgame? Was there something in a show/movie that explains this?

TLDR version. It was good, but flawed. 8/10 and that is grading on the Spier-man is my favorite superhero curve.

They moved back after graduation as Ned had gotten a job in NYC. MJ was still looking for a job.

The issue with the mutation was that he couldn’t control it because his life was so out of balance. He was neglecting being Peter Parker, so the spider was consuming him. When he embraced both the Spider and Peter Parker, he managed to find balance and view his mutation as a gift rather than an illness. Basically, he learned to work with it rather than against it, same as his need for companionship and humanity.

If it weren't for Spider Man, Marvel would be toast!

I liked much of the movie. Tom Holland was at his peak Peter Parker, at times pretty dark, to be honest. Some well placed humor, but not overt attempts at Whedon-humor, which thankfully is being phased out with out Joss. As it should.

Sadie is a fun watch, but my got, what have they done to Jean? And why is her sister also a mutant?

Took me a minute to figure out where I'd seen the Director of Damage Control, aka Milkshake (Milchick) from Severance. I had almost forgotten about that show.

Bernthal's PG-13 Punisher was done well enough. Good to see him but honestly, he's out of his league when it comes to Spider Man and proper Hulk.

And wtf is Yelena doing in this show? Hanging out in a hot tub (not a Banya) all hours of the day? Nice to look at but really?

Female cop was a useless (DEI) insert.

Peter has way too much tech. Being smart doesn't make cutting edge equipment and materials simply appear, and where's he getting all that money to fund his gear?

Still, some good parts in the movie. The heartbreak was well done too. Unfortunately my theater had some ventilation issues because there was excessive dust in the air.
