Watching Sideways again - still one of my favorite movies of all time. The music, direction, the humor, the drama, I mean, everything.

I know Thomas Hayden Church was nominated for best supporting actor, but Paul Giamatti was just fantastic. One of my favorite performances, like ever. His Miles character, while someone we only scratch the surface of really knowing personally (his background mainly), we feel his pain, his anguish. He is so judgemental of his friend, but as the movie unfolds, you see just how flawed he is himself.

And pretty much all of these characters are people we know or have known at one point in our lives.

Edit: And Virginia Masden talking about how wine taste “so fricking good” . . . Damn.

All three of the supporting actors were nominated. Giamatti not getting a nomination is one of the biggest snubs in Oscar history.

The author of the book actually wrote two sequels. The next book in the series, “Vertical,” is set a few years after the events in “Sideways.” Miles has written a runaway bestseller about his trip to wine country on his best friend’s bachelor party trip. It’s a great follow up, but unfortunately, all the principals are way too old now to pick up at that point. However, I’m sure writers could make it work.

I watch Sideways every time it’s on.

There won’t be a sequel, but keep an eye out for the Giamatti / Payne reunion called “the holdovers” … he plays a curmudgeonly English teacher in 70s New England. A nice return to form
For AP after the Downsizing misstep. Great script ….. and I will say Alexander is the nicest, most collaborative filmmaker I’ve encountered

After Giamatti later in that scene goes nuts, Church says, "His mom just died." And I lost it.

The scene that had me rolling was when he went to retrieve Church's wallet

And now he's thrown all dignity to the wind by portraying Einstein as a dummkopf for AT&T.

I personally felt he had lost it when he played a Russian mafia guy in Amazing Spiderman 2 and then was in a mechanical Rhino suit. But maybe that’s bottom and AT&T is rock bottom.

I have no doubt he’ll do some more amazing things. Gotta make the money.

Such a great film and quotable!

"I don't want the f***ing merlot!"

My favorite moment:

"Are you chewing gum?!"

The line is even better when you realize that this is not him saying that he doesn't like Merlot.

Far from it. His anniversary wine, the Cheval Blanc, is actually a blend of Merlot.

He's pissed because it triggers him as his ex wife loved it.

Fantastic film with so many tremendous subtle pieces of dialogue and acting.

The book is not very good imo and just shows how amazing Alexander Payne can be at coaxing this story to its fullest potential.

Awesome movie. Typically go to Napa but did some tasting where this was filmed (Buellton etc). Ate at Hitching Post and the restaurant where they meet the ladies and he drunk-dials.

Great area and very laid back.

That whole scene, just incredible. The way she describes the wine making process, how it would taste different today than any other day, just fricking fantastic. And then Miles not knowing what to do after...the awkwardness...just fricking brilliant!

It also tanked Merlot sales in the US but spiked Pinot Noir

You know, sunrise sunset I guess.

I'd probably give back some of my dignity for a 7 figure payday for what looks like 2 days of work. Plus residuals. His quality body of work lends to some allowances to cash in.
