And he was great in The Firm. So dissolute and pathetic.

frick. I'll say:

1) Unforgiven
2) The Conversation
3) Hoosiers

Honorable Mention: Mississippi Burning

Hard to choose and really no wrong answer though.

Hackman is one of those actors that plays great in nearly all movies he acts in.

Hoosiers is up there. Playing Lex Luther. Unforgiven. Crimson Tide. Enemy of the State. The Replacements.

He could play comedic or dramatic roles. Could be a villain or an underdog. He had range.

He’s been in so many great films and given so many great performances. My lists could change by the day, but right now for me:

Films
1. The Royal Tenenbaums
2. Unforgiven
3. The Conversation
4. The French Connection
5. Bonnie and Clyde

Performances
1. The Conversation
2. The French Connection
3. Unforgiven
4. The Royal Tenenbaums
5. Night Moves

So hard to leave off his performances in films like Scarecrow, French Connection II, Hoosiers, Mississippi Burning, and Crimson Tide.

frick this list is impossible. He was truly one of the best to ever do it.

Love Hackman, but never see the movie The Conversation. Based on this thread, looks like I need to add it to the list for this weekend's viewing.

This is an impossible choice. All of the films are listed are outstanding. Here's a few that have been mentioned that I liked:

Crimson Tide: Hackman and Denzel put on an acting master class

The Birdcage: Hackman was fricking hilarious.

Superman 1 and 2: He's my Lex Luthor

Absolutely. Have you seen The Live's of Others? The person who directed it saw The Conversation:

Youtube.

Two really great movies. Still don't see a Poseidon Adventure pick. That movie and Hackman in it were a childhood favorite. I still remember my grandfather taking me to see it. Night Moves is great once you realize what the director is trying to do. Unforgiven was his masterpiece though. French Connection and The Conversation after it.
