He is really good at sketch comedy though. But not if all his co-stars hate his guts and the writers suck.

Or, you know, maybe he just wants to introduce himself to a bigger audience that may not know who he is? Or, call me crazy, but there is something about hosting the show that fired him previously.

SNL is not a bigger audience than Rogan. Not even close. Nobody watches SNL anymore. Its been dogshit for over a decade. The few people who do watch it are unlikely to like Shane. It is not much different than the nightly talk shows where they just make a bunch of lame trump jokes and pat themselves on the back.

And if he wanted to stick it in their eye for firing him, he missed.

I venture to guess that 90% of the people in this thread watched SNL last night because of Shane, not the other way around. The SNL version of Shane is watered down piss in a warm glass, kinda like the bud light Shane is pushing these days.

They definitely neutered him and I was disappointed he didn’t take a few shots at them.

None of the skits were really dark unlike the Emu one.

That’s not what I meant. There are lots of people that watch SNL that do not listen to Rogan. Shane already has Rogan’s audience. He can expand his audience more by doing SNL

Many in here expected some rehash of what Norm did in his monologue. That would have been lame and a cop out. He could have gone many ways with it, but Shane isn’t Norm. After all, he didn’t trash SNL after his firing, so why would he now? He chose to do some standup, hoping many would see it who hadn’t seen his standup before, and perhaps buy a ticket to his shows. I’m not clutching my pearls over him not going scorched earth.

Why did they cut that Emu skit? That’s the closest thing to his type of skits

Loved that skit. It would have been the best one of the night had they aired it. That was straight up Gilly and Keeves.

He was basically too gracious for the opportunity.

Weak episode with a few funny moments. When I saw that the band was stone walling him during the monologue I knew that it was probably going to be a disappointment.

The core audience of SNL cannot define what a woman is. That is what SNL has become. It's "the left cant meme" condensed into one skit after another.

So maybe Shane wants that audience. But why? Those people arent funny. They wont ever love him unless he cuts off his dick and dyes his hair purple. He is a white guy who likes to say retard, drink beer, and watch football. You could tell at least half the people in studio hated him just by the way they were looking at him. He might as well be a nazi in their eyes.

While all true I am sure Shane wanted to follow in the footsteps of some his heroes & host the show

He has also said on numerous occasions that Lorne has always been nice to him through everything so I am sure that played in the decision to host

You could tell from the jump that the majority of the cast are there to push a narrative for one side just like the rest of late night as you mention & it just ruins any hopes of being comedic whatsoever

That is one of the reasons I like Shane as a comedian is the fact that his jokes seem to genuinely come from a comedic place rather than that of hatred or propaganda pushing a narrative

Absolutely

It is the first time in well over a decade that I have sought out to watch SNL on a Saturday night

Whoever suggested they should’ve done the Mrs. Washington bit as a skit …that would’ve absolutely killed

And i can totally buy that as a reason to do the show. Lorne has helped a lot of guys become huge stars. I can see Lorne wanting to help Shane.

But this was a miss. I dont really expect any public comments from Shane that the show sucked. But i think he will not do the show again. Hopefully we get some good jokes down the road about his experience going back.

Their final take is that "the performance left most viewers wondering why a middling talent like Gillis was tapped to host the show in the first place."

And that right there is why he shouldnt have done the show. He went in there with a neutered set and trying to play nice to a hostile audience. Thats not how you kill at comedy. Is that what Bill Burr did in Philly? Hell no, its the opposite.

Woody Harrelson had bigger balls than Shane and he is by no means a comedian. He is just a real dude who doesnt give a frick, whereas Shane is a really smart and funny dude that wants everyone to like him.

Going on SNL is like taking a total rebuild college job with sanctions.

If you crush, everyone gives you flowers for making water out of thin air

If you bomb, most will just blame the situation

The monologue was a little bumpy at first but finished strong. I think part of that is because Shane is still relatively new into stand up comedy despite his success (relative to how long it takes most comedians to really blow up). He leverages his own insecurity of his own joke and calls it out to make it a joke in of itself. He does that same thing in his normal standup. As time goes on he’ll likely learn how to really leverage that insecurity into confidence that will allow even hostile audiences to get wrapped up in it. He’s got the talent and the writing, I think he just needs the reps and this was like watching a guy in his second season play on a bigger stage and still figuring it out

He was never going to be a great fit for SNL as host or as a member. More than anything this just reinforces how much of a godsend that entire situation was for Shane despite the controversy. If that didn’t happen he’s probably still wilting away as a 12th billed cast member who gets quietly let go after a few years

Bill Burr screaming the eagles suck to a drunk crowd in Philly is so lame and overly lauded

It was the best one

I think they also missed a chance to turn Biden's shoes into a Roomba and battle Trump with the new gold shoes on the court

I think you both are overestimating his saturation to the wider audience. He has been the new "It" comedian for the last year, but only with the stand-up and Rogan crowd.
