I hope Milchick dies at the hands of a baby goat.

That might be one of the best episodes of television I’ve ever watched. At turns joyful, terrifying, confounding, creepy, layered, devastating - absolutely brilliant. And yes, Lumon officially does what it wants wherever it wants whenever it wants to whomever it wants.
ETA: And Mark might finally be ready to frick up some Eagan shite. Helena don’t even know.

I’ll probably watch that one about three more times this week.
For all the folks that were squawking about last weeks Paradise being in running for best episode of TV ever, uhh, checkmate.

Dating back epsiodes to Irvings "funeral" did anyone notice the "no malice palace" photo on the wall? This has to reference the malace in the palace between the pistons and pacers. The show is in Michigan. Plauers and fans got in a brawl. Players could sorta be seen as innies and fans as outties. A huge stretch I know but "No Malace Palace" what else could that reference but the Malace in the Palace?

I bet they promised her a way to have a child. While having prevented the pregnancy the whole time.
That would make a lot of sense. She could feel Mark pulling away and agreeing to get severed if it meant having a child would do the trick.

Those weird cards are used to recruit.
She mentioned getting them in the mail. And then said something about "drawing a duck or a rabbit". Which is the type of picture that Milchick has behind his desk. I can't find the picture of his office but it's like this picture.

The tone of this show has completely shifted.
I guess it was always heading there but it’s a different show from season one.

Long post warning:
I was thinking about what ‘cold harbor’ is since watching the last episode, and it has been in our faces the whole time. Im like 80% sure on this.
Based on the last episode, Gemma is the test rat for a more complex severance in order to avoid all painful experiences from her outie’s consciousness. Essentially there’s multiple separate innies for Gemma, each unique to the situation .
The work Mark is doing is to ensure that the painful experiences dont leak over into her main consciousness. Each room is its own painful experience which each have been projects Mark has worked on and completed already.
It’s also evident that the progress Lumen has made on avoiding pain is good enough to push to the market since they have a severed birth retreat where women ‘avoid’ the pain of childbirth.
Now what is the next step to eliminating pain and is worse than child birth? Also, why hasn’t Gemma been in the Cold Harbor room yet but has been in other rooms several times before? I’m also thinking ‘cold harvor’ is a one time only room too due to the Christmas sweater guy’s conversation with Drummond regarding him not being able to see her anymore after ‘cold harbor’
My answer is death or a near death experience such as wrecking a car and landing into a ‘cold harbor.’
It is strongly believed at this point Gemma hasn’t been in a wreck at all at this point and willingly walked into Lumen for a reason Im not sure on yet. The irony though is Mark is essentially working on the last room for Gemma to making her deadly crash a reality and fulfill Lumen’s ultimate goal.
Lumen’s ultimate goal is to have the Severance procedure help the outie to avoid any and all pain throughout their lives including death.
The question is now, how is Mark going to stop it.
———-
TLDR; Gemma is a test rat and the work Mark is doing is actually progressing towards actually killing her for Lumen’s ultimate goal of perfecting the severance procedure.
This show is awesome. Great payoff this week

So the blood donation machine had a Lumon logo. Seems that the blood made Mark, Gemma or both desirable for Lumon.
Good catch, I totally missed that. I need to watch this episode again.
Just looked up the lyrics to Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald since everything on this show is done on purpose. Figured it might have something to do with Cold Harbor? Maybe she ends up in the water.
What made Gemma walk into Lumon voluntarily? Sounds like she didn’t know they were going to tell Mark she died.
I was expecting to see Corbel’s face at the end of the episode. Bad move by Dylan.

Gonna need to rewatch a couple more times as well, but that episode is close to International Assassin level good. Wow.

Yep. I agree.
That episode was incredible. I'll need to re-watch, but I think you have nailed it.
My only question though, is why "Ms. Casey" was ever on the severed floor with Mark. I guess it was to test if her and Mark would recognize each other.

So I think its also obvious that the State of Kier is its own entity from the normal, outside world.
My only question is why did Devon follow Mark to Kier? I guess it was just to take care of him and watch? Or do they come and go? But when Cobol was leaving it seemed like Kier was in the middle of nowhere.

name of the episode is Chikhai Bardo, and it's very telling.
quote:
In some schools of Buddhism, bardo or antarabhava is an intermediate, transitional, or liminal state between death and rebirth.
Used without qualification, "bardo" is the state of existence intermediate between two lives on earth. According to Tibetan tradition, after death and before one's next birth, when one's consciousness is not connected with a physical body, one experiences a variety of phenomena. These usually follow a particular sequence of degeneration from, just after death, the clearest experiences of reality of which one is spiritually capable, and then proceeding to terrifying hallucinations that arise from the impulses of one's previous unskillful actions. For the prepared and appropriately trained individuals, the bardo offers a state of great opportunity for liberation, since transcendental insight may arise with the direct experience of reality; for others, it can become a place of danger as the karmically created hallucinations can impel one into a less than desirable rebirth.
Metaphorically, bardo can be used to describe times when the usual way of life becomes suspended, as, for example, during a period of illness or during a meditation retreat. Such times can prove fruitful for spiritual progress because external constraints diminish. However, they can also present challenges because our less skillful impulses may come to the foreground, just as in the sidpa bardo.
