It's unclear what the future holds for Channing Tatum's Gambit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after his triumphant debut in Deadpool & Wolverine, but the film's actor, writer, and executive producer Ryan Reynolds says Marvel is "obsessed" with this performance. Some might say that's a good sign.

"I honestly don't know what goes on behind closed doors in the bookkeeping sessions at Marvel, but I do know that they're obsessed with him in that role," Reynolds says of Tatum's card-slinging Cajun mutant on Entertainment Weekly's Awardist podcast. "It's kind of like the same situation I went through. Once you show that it works well, that's really what they need. Sometimes they just need to see it in action."

Reynolds is referring to that test footage of his Deadpool that leaked in 2014 and proved to the studio that there was enough hype to move forward with a movie. Earlier this year, Reynolds admitted he "might have provided an assist" in that leak. In a similar way, he hopes Deadpool & Wolverine can be a proof of concept to Marvel to bring back Tatum as Gambit.

This is how movies as bad as Morpheus get made.

Gambit in the context of that Deadpool movie works great, trying to put it outside of that context is a recipe for disaster. I’m not sure if it even works as a recurring bit just in Deadpool movies.

Make a Gambit movie with the same tone of Deadpool and bring in Jonah Hill as the villain. Profit.

I don’t know. There’s a reason they avoided Deadpool on paper for so long too.

You have to do it right, and you can’t take it too seriously. But you can’t play it off as a parody. I wouldn’t love Batman 66 series if Adam West couldn’t ask Burt Ward for Shark Repellant BatSpray while fighting a rubber shark and still make my think “Well hurry the frick up Robin, the bombs gonna blow.”

Gambit started early prep in NOLA about 7 years ago … mostly surveying to build a portion of the French Quarter at the old six flags.

Clearly it fell apart from there, but it was a go with Channing for a minute

It was niche for the Deadpool universe, I don't know it would work outside of that.

If they try to move forward with him they would need to retool quite a few things.

1. Accent.
2. Less goofy, a bit more suave.
3. Better fighting skills, including power use which looks better visually (better effects on card flinging, for example).

Along with that, a fun take might be for him to go to the 616 universe (by accident, it's the only one left, whatevs) then having to build a life up there from scratch (go to Xavier's to find it's not there, go to New Orleans and no one knows him, etc).

I saw an interview with Channing Tatum talking about how his dad is from New Orleans....and when he said it was the most bizarre try-hard pronunciation of New Orleans ive ever heard. Not close to anything anyone has ever said. And it pissed me off irrationally. So fricking phony haha

Ryan Reynolds is the one obsessed. And is trying to market the character so he can self-promote and make bank off it. Dont believe me? Just ask:

Same here. It was almost as if he was playing him as a lameass on purpose.
