What are films you don't like from your favorite directors?

quote:

SHOW US A director who never created at least one genuine turkey of a movie, and we’ll show you a director with an extremely short career. There’s simply too many things that can go wrong once a movie goes into production: The budget can get slashed, filming might start before the script is finalized, key actors could drop out, and the studio could meddle in all sorts of irksome ways.

That’s why titans of cinema like Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielgerg, James Cameron, and Ridley Scott all have at least one movie they wish they could erase from their IMDB page. Some of them were made when they were young novices without any real ability to say no. Some of them were made at the peak of their powers when they made horrid bad decisions out of greed, hubris, or temporary insanity. And many were shot in the waning days of their careers when getting a green light for any project was difficult.

With all this in mind, we assembled this list of 50 truly terrible movies by otherwise brilliant directors. We know some of these will be controversial choices. There are folks out there that truly love Alien 3, Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace, and Jupiter Ascending. One moviegoer’s disaster is another moviegoer’s cult classic. But we don’t think there are many hardcore Jack, North, or Wild, Wild West fans out there. These are terrible, terrible movies. If we gave truth serum to Francis Ford Coppola, Rob Reiner, and Barry Sonnenfeld, they’d all likely agree.

quote:

10. How The Grinch Stole Christmas (Ron Howard)

9. She’s Having a Baby (John Hughes)

8. Amsterdam (David O’Russell)

7. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (George Lucas)

The first Star Wars prequel poses many questions: Did we really need to meet Darth Vader as a nine-year-old? Did they really think moviegoers would be charmed by the antics of Jar Jar Binks? Why is Anakin’s slave master a flying insect with an Israeli accent and a nose straight out of Nazi propaganda cartoons? What’s this midi-chlorian bullshite? We waited 16 endless years for this? To be clear, the prequels got better as they went along. The third one is actually pretty great. And the sequel trilogy is so abysmal, especially the most recent movie, that this one is actually somewhat solid by comparison. But George Lucas didn’t direct the newer ones. He did direct Phantom Menace.

quote:

6. Piranha II: The Spawning (James Cameron)

5. Planet of the Apes (Tim Burton)

4. Psycho (Gus Van Sant)

3. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Steven Spielberg)

2. North (Rob Reiner)

1. Jack (Francis Ford Coppola)

rest of the list

Calling George Lucas a "great director" is a little suspect imo.

He is a visionary, a great idea guy, a great marketer, and he has made some great movies.

I'm not sure I'd call him a great Director. The best film in his main series wasn't directed by him.

Piranha 2 was Cameron’s first director job, for Roger Corman, and he got fired from it yet they left his name on the film.

Jack? Francis Ford Coppola went broke after One From The Heart at the start of the 80s and took any shite project he could to keep his studio, American Zoetrope, from going under. He wasn’t exactly turning down a lot of scripts at that time.

Alien 3 may be on the list but the history with that project is such a fricking disaster that Fincher couldn’t have done much better due to the constraints on him.

I hold early projects / studio influenced disasters / “Money dear boy!” projects separate from when a major director fricks up something like a Star Wars or Indiana Jones film.

Grindhouse by Tarantino is the first that came to my mind. Love me some Tarantino but man I hated that movie. It's the only QT film I dislike.

quote:

4. Psycho (Gus Van Sant)

Odd choice to be so high on the list given that 10 is Gus Van Sant really considered to be THAT great of a director and 2) that shot for shot remake of Psycho was actually pretty good. It was more of an ode to Psycho than something that was trying to top it. The original Psycho is arguably my favorite movie of all time and it did not need to be remade, but it was done out of respect and didn't tarnish the originals legacy.

quote:

‘Alien 3’ (David Fincher)

Underrated movie imo.

Ridley has about 5 of these from the past 10 years alone

Planet of the Apes wasn't THAT bad. If you're gonna talk terrible Tim Burton movies, put that craptacular Alice in Wonderland movie in its place. Or probably Dumbo (I didn't see it)

This is not even a terrible movie. Neither is The Good German. Worthless pinkos at RS can't even discern good from bad.

Aww c'mon man. It's Kevin Bacon! The movie is not remotely terrible. Plus I had a movie crush on Elizabeth McGovern growing up.

She has eyes like the deep blue sea.

Didn't hurt that she constantly nuded-up back then.

I think it's excellent actually. Best use of a song in all of movies as well.

American Grafitti and the OG Star Wars were very well made films. Even THX 1138 had some incredibly great moments.

Basically, Anything after 1970s was a shite show, though.

I actually think that's a really solid live action adaptation of that story. Shouldn't be on this list at all IMO.

I liked TPM. If anything, Attack of the Clones should be on this list. It is by far the worst of the prequels. I have my gripes with TPM but ultimately it is decent enough and the Star Wars fix was great at the time.

This thread reminds me of that South Park clip about Steven Spielberg:

Agreed and same. In regards to Elizabeth McGovern, Racing with the Moon (1984) was a favorite of mine growing up. Young Cage, Penn and McGovern.

Dammit I just used my Natalie Raps say something about the prequels gif. Should have saved it.

Rob Reiner as a great director? lol. Nothing past “A few Good men” is what I’d call a good movie.

Not sure I can take anything seriously when they cannot get the man's name correct. His last name isn't "O’Russell". His middle initial is O. (for Owen) and his last name Russell. Hence, David O. Russell.

Do these people think Mace Windu was portrayed by Samuel El-Jackson?

Ridley Scott is Babe Ruth IMHO…

He will swing at anything and he will either have a record tape homer or strike out horribly.

I don’t think Rob Reiner is some great director, but he’s definitely directed a lot of good movies outside of A Few Good Men.
