In this thread we will have people complaining about every detail of a show they swear they won’t watch a second of but will spend hours reading articles and watching videos about it. Most of y’all deserve the misery you create for yourself.

- Not Tolkien’s characters

Honestly, this is enough.

I can understand making something that discusses fringe characters and does so in a more lighthearted, respectful way (like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead).

It just feels disrespectful to take a dead author's works and then just treat them like their own, regardless of "purchased rights".

Imagine if I purchased the rights to Harry Potter after JK Rowling passes away and then wrote a story of him where he shits his pants every time someone with a Slitherin badge walks into view. Then he gets nicknamed Harry Pooper and gets kicked out and it turns out all the stories were about a different kid who took a potion to look like Harry Potter instead and the title was Harry Potter and The Clone Saga.

Everyone would hate me and they'd be justified in that hate.

Even Forbes is trashing this idea. Forbes article.

Like I said earlier, I personally think this could be the biggest disrespect they would have given to Tolkien if they actually give him a background story. But after reading the article, I don't think that's what they're doing.

quote:

His isolationist standing will change in a fairly noticeable way in season 2, according to Payne, even as his primary motivation does not. As he explains:

"When he finally crosses paths with the Stranger, you could say he has a desire to try to keep the destruction that has happened there from spreading to his beloved lands in the West. He nudges the Stranger along his journey, which he knows will eventually protect the larger natural world that he cares about. So I'd say our Tom Bombadil is slightly more interventionist than you see in the books, but only by 5% or 10%."

quote:

For those worried that the show will ditch Bombadil's silly and jarringly whimsical tone, however, fear not! Even as the season takes a darker turn, Payne describes their take on Bombadil as: "He sort of defies the tonal shift of the rest of the season and is a real point of light amidst an otherwise sea of darkness."

Whether or not the 5% to 10% change is true, that is yet to be seen. I feel like they have to change him more than that if they are having him be involved/caring about the destruction of the world around him. That's out of character and a simple reason not to include him in the show. To include him, you have to make him different from lore. He is still going to be a lighthearted character, but the nerdrotic bozo and all his little minions that post on here will make him being involved in the worlds affairs will be something they cream their pants over hate watching.

There's some things Tolkien wrote about Tom and book info but not much. In some ways, Tom is a protector of nature. Sorta like Treebeard & the Ents. Which would make him as old as any living creature in Middle Earth. There's an idiotic fanfic being pushed ( I assume it predates Amazon's stupid show) that Tom & Goldberry are actually Melkor & Ungollant serving out their sentence incognito, that somehow they both represent the GOOD in those characters... I wish I were kidding.

Anyway…

The point is, that people like me who love Lord of the Rings and the universe yet aren’t super involved in the lore, still see that Rings of Power is a big steaming pile of shite. It doesn’t matter to me personally that the characters may be bastardized because I don’t know the obscure characters and their little quirks or personalities. It’s that the show fricking sucks. So whether you’re a hardcore fan of the lore or not, it’s still a terrible show and there should be no faith that it will get better.

Lore people are mad because a great author created a great universe. You don’t have to really DO anything. Yet they couldn’t even manage that.

At least HBO and DandD had an excuse…their source material dried up and they couldn’t match the genius.

I wouldn’t mind a story about Tom Bombadil or other characters. I just have zero faith in the activists making the show.

Looks like some of the smarter actors are jumping ship.

So much for Look Who's Coming to Second Breakfast
quote:

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will return with Season 2 later this year. However, it was confirmed that one key actor would not be a part of the story anymore.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Nazanin Boniadi, who played Bronwyn, is not coming back for The Rings of Power Season 2. The actress had a significant role in the story, and she appeared in six of the eight episodes of Season 1. She is a human healer and Theo's mother. Bronwyn was also involved in a love story with Silvan Elf Arondir, and that will be something that will not continue in the show's Season 2.

There’s nothing these crop of activist writers @ Amazon can do that can add to or enhance Tolkien’s characters.

Tom was once an average pub musician. Until one day an orc insults a gay man. Tom races into action and goes apeshit for LGBTQ+ rights, eventually realizing he’s in the right and everyone else is insane

looks like Rory Kinnear is playing him. Nothing from the article shows he will be mutilated

He looks nothing like he did in the books.

And if they treat his character like they have the others, I’m sure they will butcher him.

That show is a complete dumpster fire.

The reason Jackson didn’t use him is because it would be incredibly hard to capture that character on camera without coming off as overly silly and insane.

Odds are they will butcher the character.

Not sure why I’m complaining, I stopped watching after episode two and will never go back.

Get the story behind him? That’s mutilating it. Tolkien purposely made Tom’s background ambiguous and mysterious. There’s nothing these crop of activist writers @ Amazon can do that can add to or enhance Tolkien’s characters.

Bombadil was a holdover from another version that eventually morphed into LOTR. Tolkien just liked him and didn't want to cut what was a throwaway inconsequential scene.

Tom was anachronistic and apart from the world. He was a temporary haven but could not affect the world or would not. If he is used in that way, I can't complain.

I mean, I don't know. I wanted to see Robin Williams play him, but I'm not going to start a riot over a minor character.

Since the Rings of Power is bullshite and not actual LOTR lore I will forgive Amazon for Season 1 if they make Tom into Eru Iluvatar. Tolkien has explicitly said that Tom isn't Eru but I love that idea so give me what I want Amazon.
