I can't see this being anything more than a combo of the old gladiator and Starz show Spartacus. I know it'll be a money grab, but pending the casting choices I will still see it.
At the very least I hope they stick with the same cinematography and not try to "improve" it with today's technology. That's part of what made the original so great.

I'd be all for another Gladiator film if it were set during the Crisis of the Third Century after Commodus' death, or later during the rise of Constantine, but not really sure how that could tie into the plot of the original Gladiator film.
A prequel about Maximus becoming general would also be awesome, but that would probably require a lot of work to make Russell Crowe look younger.

Just make a movie about a young Celtic boy stolen from his butchered parents, kept as a labor slave, and thrown into the gladiator pit to survive as an adult.
Then he becomes a great Warrior and starts banging chicks, training with samurai, and ending with him running off into the distance, away from slavery and the gladiator life, only to find a Mythical sword in a darkened underground long dead king's lair...
Oh wait, that's the first act of Conan.
