quote:The thing that stood out for upon an adult re-watch was that I now identified with the show through the eyes of Jack (the dad) and not Kevin - and it was, if anything, even more profound.

I rewatched last year and was a bit surprised how awful Kevin and Winnie were together… and I kind of hated her by the end. Cara is who he should’ve ended up with
I rewatched it years ago, and then rewatched the first 2/3 seasons again with my stepdaughter about 8 years or so ago.
The thing that stood out to me on rewatch was just how whiney Kevin was. Like every single episode he was bitching and crying about something, and he wasn't really a great person/friend most of the time.
quote:That's amazing.
Fun fact: the ringtone for my wife on my phone is the Winnie Cooper theme.

the remake is 1000x better

I agree with that.
It’s actually pretty cool having grown up with the show rewatching it now as an adult and getting a completely different perspective of the show, characters, and messages.

Madeline
Someone mentioned the lake girl - Cara. She was my favorite of the non-Winnie girlfriends. The end of the first Lake episode is arguably the high point of the series.

I'm guessing you are also like me in that you are older IRL than Jack ever was in the show? That alone is enough of a gut punch.

Definitely. I will be 47 next month, and Dan Lauria was only 41 when the show first started.

I think the beach episode is my favorite of the entire series. But the lake ones are also great too and have the same vibe.
I vividly remember being like 12/13 and going to the beach with my whole family, and meeting this chick and basically falling in love with her. And we got each others' addresses and promised to write and all of that.
And of course never did.

Winnie was way too hot to be dating that little weasel Kevin. (Yes I know she was 12, just trying to be objective not pervy)

As someone who recently 40, I did not need to know this .

I always found the end of the beach episode, assuming it’s the same one, very poignant. He says somwthing about how the girl wrote him a letter in which she cried herself to sleep because she missed him so much, etc. and that he still has that letter and then closes “it was the only letter she ever sent.”
Sorry I see I’m late to the party with that one. I’m glad it’s not just me.
I think everyone had one of those flings as a kid.
Also, that chick ended up being one of tiger Woods’s bottom bitches irl.

The one that got me the hardest years ago is that Bruce Willis was only 32 in Die Hard.
(sorry)

My god - she touched my leg!
$4 bucks for a piece of fish?
Does my face look all red and blotchy?
So...how's CHIP?
quote:I think you're forgetting -she did write you one time and you keep that letter in an old box somewhere.
And of course never did.

quote:Fred Savage was believed to be quite cute when he was a kid.
And this whiny chunky little dude had hotties throwing themselves at him all the time. Most guys like that don't kiss a girl until college. That was probably the most annoying part of the show for me, watching it as a kid, but a lot of shows have ugly dudes with hot wives or girlfriends so guess it's a Hollywood thing for some reason.
He also had ugly chicks throwing themselves at him too.
The only truly ridiculous one was Madeline. He and Winnie had a family history and proximity + a 1st kiss when they were very young.

quote:Weird. From the ages of, say, 20-40, I think she looked even better - better than her child self's appearance would have predicted.
I don’t think Danica Mckellar has aged well at all.
I'm sure everyone here knows that her sister IRL was Becky Slater - who Kevin also dated.
When Danica was 35, she was outright fine - and a math PhD to boot.

I think people are too hard on Kevin. pre-teens and early teens are selfish, self-absorbed whiny assholes. That's just a fact. He wasn't some kind of outlier in this regard. He was also depicted as someone with exceptional emotional depth - remember his reaction when the math teacher died?
Winnie was a deeply troubled young lady - brother killed in war, parents split, etc. I don't blame her for how she was either.

Also, fun fact: Wikipedia just told me that the girl who played Teri in the episode I just mentioned...she grew up and made porn (Holly Sampson). And also was apparently one of the sloots that Tiger Woods banged on his bachelor party.
Meh

Was she the one who went to take her shirt off on a boat, and Kevin's bitch arse pussied out and fell out the boat?

Actually this was my takeaway too. I think Jack is the most interesting character,,, when I watched as a kid I thought he was a tough kind of mean dad… on the rewatch you realize he’s basically as good of a dad as possible and always doing everything he can for his kids.., ngl at one point I teared up thinking about it because he reminded me a lot of my own father

The parental relationship was explored a decent bit too, to great effect. I also like how they show the tension between Jack and his own father. It leads to a line that gets quoted in my house all the time:
quote:
Hear that, Norma? Too much STARCH in the potatoes

I grew up watching and loving Boy Meets World and never even knew about Wonder Years until my friends in college showed me and we rewatched reruns.. really enjoyed it and liked it more than BMW when it was all said and done

Babe. I think had a boob reduction IRL. Didn’t she make a documentary where she revealed Charlie Sheen was her first bang?
