Loved it several years ago. Decided to do a rewatch. Still great, but amazed at how much wasted time there is in multiple episodes esp considering it’s only 5 seasons.

Most popular series’ go several more seasons. Perhaps 5 is the magic number. Even with that, there is so much idle time. The fly in the lab for example. Jesse’s binging episodes. Hank’s rehab. Hard to get through at times, but when it moves, it moves I guess.

I hate Marie more and Skyler on a second watch mostly because of Walt just becoming a shitty person. Biggest thing I’ve noticed is Walt never enjoyed the fruits of his labor at all. True unhappiness. Hank is also more of a badass than I originally thought. Never liked him the first watch. Love him the second.

Overall still a great show. Man, Jesse dealt with a lot of shite. Prob my favorite character overall. Saul carries the series through the slow times.

All dramas are less...dramatic?.. on the 2nd viewing. Most of what you're talking about about is necessary for character development. That's really what the show was about.

Agree on the Fly episode. Awful, just awful.

I also thought when they moved the meth business into the pest extermination tent business was beyond silly.

there were a lot of screwball scenarios/scenes in the early portions of the show. it really takes away from the show on rewatches

Agree 100%. It would’ve honestly been better to somehow end it on Season 4. Season 5 got pretty wonky.

If you feel that way about Breaking Bad do yourself a favor and don't rewatch and spoil your memories of The Sopranos. The amount of wasted time/scenes and terrible annoying charters (daughter, son, mom, etc) are brutal.

I'm currently watching Sapranos for the first time and yeah.... I know what you mean.

I'm in the minority of viewers who really enjoyed "Fly." There wasn't any plot movement, but there was lots of character establishment. Those 45 minutes said a lot about who Walter White was and what drove him. Most folks could see a bit of themselves or someone they loved in that portrayal. It was hardly a wasted episode, in my view.

my kids are 11 and 14 and we're going through a rewatch of lost with them.

we watched it real time 10 years ago and i've got to several points where i'm just rolling my eyes when i see it's certain episodes because i know that it's going to be such a waste of time.

case in point, we just watched the van episode. at the time, it was really nice to see the characters have a small high point in a pretty depressing set of events. my kids were happy for hurley when he got it running and they took a few laps. for me, since i know where the series is going, was such a waste of an episode. will feel the same in the Nicki and Paulo episode (even though i do actually enjoy that episode.)

i think when you're rewatching something you've seen, you're going to look less fondly on filler episodes than at the time.

Just my .02.

Fly was the only really bad episode in the entire series. It was also directed by Rian Johnson. Nuff said.

Rewatching myself and I have a question. How did Walt know to put the towel down when throwing up like Gus did?

To each his own. I stand by "Fly."

What I didn't care for near the end of the series' run was the fan-service being offered-up by Vince Gilligan.

In my view, there's no way Walt would've told Jesse he watched Jane die. That scene felt clunky. But, fans of the show long clamored to see what would happen when Jesse found out about this. I felt that revelation was shoehorned into the script to make those folks happy.

I don't think he would have told him about Jane if he didn't feel like he was directly responsible for Hank's death because of him ratting him out and getting to the conclusion they were facing. It was a lashing out during an extremely emotional time to hurt him as much as he could for what just happened. It felt logical to me given what just happened.

Crazy for you to post this now as I’m watching it through again for the first time since it originally aired. I’m almost done. I still think it is the best series I have ever seen, right up there with Lost. The Fly episode stuck out like a sore thumb. On rewatch I decided to google “worst breaking bad episode” because it was so horrible and sure enough, it was a near unanimous #1 pick. I would say the series has held up really well.

My one big beef is that someone as meticulous and careful as Walter White would not have left that signed book sitting on top of his toilet. Why did he even keep it? He didn’t even much care for Gale, hell, he even had him killed. If he liked the book so much he could have bought a copy.

I think one of the issues is on rewatch you know when the great scenes are coming up and your anticipation makes the slower moments seem even slower.

Hubris. And hardly the only time in the series that it bites Walt square on the arse.

Oh, and also, the amount of purple in Hank and Marie’s house was just absurd. I am well aware the purple represented the fact that they were not a part of the meth business, innocent, etc. But my god, does anyone actually have that much purple in their house and wardrobe?

You are getting downvoted into oblivion, but I agree with you. I said the same thing in here once I finally watched the show a few years ago. It’s good. Really good. Not GOAT IMO but that’s not a knock on it really. But one thing that stood out to me was how slowly the stories move along. It was fine for me as I was binging it but I couldn’t imagine watching it live and waiting literally weeks for stuff to move forward.

Great show though.

This puzzled me at first too, however a possible explanation is that Gale gave him the book and Walt never opened it and just tossed it in the bathroom.

Or it's a possible statement that no one can cover up every little bit of evidence, no matter how meticulous they are. Walt was hugely successful in covering their tracks from a police standpoint however his focus wasnt so much on a little thing like that book.

Yeah for instance the last scene of Crawl Space doesn’t hit as hard when I saw it originally.

One of the few scenes where my mouth was agape when the credits rolled.
