My buddy and I growing up (around 12-14 years old or so), whenever we'd go to his camp the adults would take us to rent three movies to keep us occupied while they partied it up.
And we'd always rent a scary movie to freak us out, a cartoon to negate the scary movie, and Revenge of the Nerds.
To this day I am not sure any of the parents had seen it since they never balked at us renting it. Man, that was good times.
And yeah, the nerds aren't exactly the good guys in this one.
Rape, theft, voeurism, etc.

This was made at a time when playing up stereotypes was perfectly ok. Lamar's javelin playing into his limp wristed throwing style was genius. Also the start of the "intimidating group of black guys" trope that we saw several times in the 80s.

*Booger is teaching Takashi poker*
Takashi: I think I've got a frush.
Booger: What the frick's a frush?
Takashi: [showing his royal flush] A *frush*.
Booger: [showing his cards] Oh, well I've got two sevens and two sevens beats a frush.
Takashi: Oh, thank you.
It's been too long since I've watched this. Gotta dust off the DVD this evening...

Probably started w/ Animal House '78. Also:

How can you be absolutely wrong about fricking everything. A fricking broken clock is right twice a day but you cant even fricking do that.

I'd be pretty upset too if a group of guys tar & feathered me and force me to have sex with a farm animal. All bets are off!

That was actually hilarious as they played up the shaft/funk music as these black dudes who look late 20s/30s lined up to intimidate the atoms football team.

Revenge of the Nerds is an underrated
I wouldn’t call it underrated. It’s a highly regarded ‘80s comedy.

That scene where the Nerd Dad was driving them to school with the cruise control set at 45mph. They knew exactly when they were going to hit that pot hole and then the eruption of Nerd Laughter.

It’s certainly not underrated by any means. I’d imagine most dudes between ages ~40-55 have it ranked very high in their 80s comedies.
The only thing underrated about it maybe is John Goodman. Because he was excellent in it.

Here's the thing: I'm not.
Your Elite Tier looks something like this
Caddyshack
National Lampoon's Vacation
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Major League
Trading Places
Coming to America
Ghostbusters
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Planes, Trains, & Automobiles
Spaceballs
Big
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Airplane
Stripes
Fletch
Genre-benders but likely considered comedies:
Beverly Hills Cop
Beverly Hills Cop 2
The Blues Brothers
48 Hours
Back to the Future
Beetlejuice
Midnight Run
Good Morning, Vietnam
Genre-benders not likely considered comedies:
The Goonies
Raising Arizona
Short Circuit
Non-Elite Tier but good comedies better than ROTN
Adventures in Babysitting
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
The Burbs
Uncle Buck
The Great Outdoors
The Great Outdoors
Sixteen Candles
Weird Science
The Breakfast Club
Better Off Dead
Three Amigos
Then you have the ROTN tier
Police Academy
Crocodile Dundee
Look Who's Talking
Mr. Mom
Bachelor Party
Back to School
Summer School
Three Men and a Baby
The 80s had a lot of comedies. ROTN is nowhere near top tier when you look at a listing of them. Hell I'm sure people will get upset I didn't include 80s comedies in that list they consider better than ROTN

That was meant to go in the one above (genre movie likely to be comedy). I did that list super fast.

No mention of Porky's, list is shite.

There's still many lines from ROTN I can recite and laugh out loud 40 years later. Can't say that for any other movie on that list.

My girlfriend at the time had her whole family including middle age parents and some neighbors (probably about 15 people) dress in nerd costumes and go to the movie at the theater in the local indoor shopping mall. Different times …

They had nerds of all kinds. Nerd Nerd, Asian Nerd, Kid Genius Nerd, Gay Nerd, Allergic Nerd, Girl Nerd, Asian Nerd, and of course Booger Eating Nerd.
