How is PHM for kids? I have a 6.5 year old and he's seen a good bit of movies that are what I guess I'd call "soft PG-13" movies. Like he's seen Jurassic Park and whatnot.

If he can make it through the parts before Rocky gets there without being too bored- I find it hard to believe he won’t like it.

Heroic movie about someone with originally no intention or inclination for heroism. Optimistic and fun- which are hard movies to find in modernity.

Mine are 13 and 9. Everyone in the family enjoyed the heck out of it.

I can’t for the life of me figure out the PG-13 rating. Maybe there was a word or two I just didn’t catch- and I’ve seen it twice.

There was one drug reference I remember by one of the astronauts- but it wasn’t what you’d think.

What type of miserable nihilist down votes that?

Where does she get off having a loving husband who’s also a good father? The nerve.

Same here. This is per google AI:
quote:

Project Hail Mary is rated PG-13 by the MPAA primarily for thematic material and intense sci-fi peril. Key factors include scenes of intense survival situations, a character facing a, a character facing a high-stakes, life-or-death mission, images of deceased crew members, and discussions about suicide, along with mild profanity and some social drinking.

quote:

Key Elements Contributing to the PG-13 Rating:

Intense Sequences & Peril: The film contains intense scenes of space travel, accidents, and life-or-death situations, such as a character being knocked unconscious, a forced injection, and dangerous spacewalks.

Thematic Elements: The plot focuses on a desperate, high-stakes mission to prevent the extinction of humanity, which includes discussions on suicide as a contingency plan.

Death & Injury: Early scenes show the discovery of dead bodies in space, which are then handled in a funeral scene.

Suggestive Content & Alcohol: The film features, at times, social drinking (e.g., wine, vodka), some mild flirting, and references to hookups.

Mild Language: The dialogue contains occasional mild profanity, including words like "piss" and some uses of "Oh my God".

The film focuses heavily on, and, a, at times, comical relationship between the main character and an alien, rather than heavy gore or explicit violence.

So basically the mildest PG-13 rating ever?

I mean, if you have to list that they say "Oh my God"....TWICE, then parents should be forewarned.

Yeah the PG-13 rating was silly

But even this was done in the context of either starving to death in space because of a one way mission, or taking another option.

Yeah- heavy stuff for sure, but it wasn’t done in a pro euthanasia manner or anything evil.

I don’t get all the “ great” reviews I see online. It was one of the worst movies I’ve seen in the last decade

Good grief. It is one thing to say you don't like it. I disagree, but it's fine if it isn't your thing. But when compared to the slop Hollywood has been dishing out over the last decade, it is hard for me to take this as a genuine statement and not some pursuit to be some kind of edge lord.

Yeah. The only thing I can think of is that there is some pretty intense scenes in there, but I don't see anything that would be harmful to a child. The child might get bored or not like it I guess, but that shouldn't warrant PG-13.

The only thing I could think of was the dead bodies of the other astronauts.

I agree that Hollywood has been trash for years. I really tried to like but I’m old 59 ( yeah get off my fricking lawn) I took my grandson (13)and he really liked it. Maybe I was expecting more with the great reviews but it was so slow in the beginning. Must be a generation thing

That's certainly a take.

Is it the only movie you've seen in the past decade?

Can you post your three favorite movies over the last decade, just so we can have a bearing on your taste? I am dumbfounded.

like I said I’m older but I just didn’t care for it. My grandson wanted to see it. He enjoyed it . My top three just off the top is probably( last decade )Oppenheimer, Old Henry and John Wick. My top three all time is The Godfather, Casino and Rouders. When I say old I seen Jaws and ET at the theaters when they first came out lol ( I enjoyed both BTW)

You’re 59. Lots of people on this site are around your age and some even much older. This site isn’t a bunch of college age kids anymore

Great movie...

Even better is the fact that my 11 year old is constantly saying "fist my bump" to my 14 year old annoying the hell out of him.

When I got them in bed I got in 11 year olds face and said "Daddy watch sleep, question?"

Got a good chuckle out of it.

For book readers.... Rocky was up there for over 40 years ??!!? I wonder why that wasn't mentioned in the movie. So he was working on this program before Grace was even born? Grace is like a pet to Rocky on his life timeline

Not sure if this has been brought up yet, but one of the voices that Rocky and Grace pass on when they're deciding on a voice for Rocky... was provided by Ray Porter, who narrated the amazing audio book version of Project Hail Mary.
