So how did Carol’s girl/friend just flat out die instead of turn as well? Just one of the unlucky ones?

one of the unlucky 886,000,000+.

She fell hard on her head. I'm guessing she died of a brain injury

886MM didn’t die from a fall though, there’s more to it that we’ve not been shown yet

Yeah that’s like 10% of the world population. On one hand it’s not terribly difficult to imagine how the entire world spazzing out for 15 minutes or whatever might result in a lot of deaths. On the other hand.. 10% of the population?
I suppose you’d have mass casualties in population centers that were in rush hour at the time. Thinking about the interstate when all of the drivers seize up. But even then it doesn’t seem like they would all die. And the event seemed way too short-lived for any long term effects from power outages etc. to have that sort of impact.
I agree, I think there’s more to that story. Maybe the “infection” itself killed a bunch of people.

Planes crashing, trains coming off the rails, every single vehicle being driven globally crashing

Anybody operating heavy machinery, working in a factory, swimming, literally doing anything where a split second of lost focus could result in death. 10% of the worlds population is an easy figure to get to.

Have we discussed Carol. Great character. Extremely flawed. Those are the best. You kinda see her point of view, don’t trust the hive mind and want to be on her side, but she’s extremely unlikeable as a person. Real nasty bitch sometimes. She really didn’t like people before all this stuff started happening. Most likely has a drinking problem. Her path will be interesting to watch.

Rhea Seehorn is wicked smart. 140+ IQ easily.

I’ve got a guess for the season finale cliffhanger. I think someone in Carol’s proximity actually ‘wakes up” instead of dying when she has one of her outburst. Then proceeds to tell Carol what the hive mind is really up to.

I guess I was so immersed in the plot and all that was going on in the show I didn’t realize that was her wife that dies. I thought it was just her agent and good friend

quote:it really isnt...880 million people is in no way an easy figure to eliminate in a single moment. i do believe there is way more to this than we've been shown. gilligan could have picked a number exponentially lower than that and had the same narrative effect if that's all there was to it

I think it's pretty simple really.
The 880MM people that died were the ones immune to the process.
The 13 people that lived and did not join the hive were simply supposed to die and be part of the 880million.
The confusion by the hive on "why it happened?" isn't, "why did you not join the hive" -- they expected a certain conversion rate failure. What is surprising is that those 13 people survived the expected termination of life of those not able to join the hive.

agree, which changes the whole dynamic of the story thus far. the question then becomes, did the hive have foreknowledge of the genocide about to happen, and if so, how?
and further, what is/was it about the immune that makes them immune? if your theory is correct, it has to be something specific to be as widespread as that (10% of population)

We rewatched the first two episodes and I caught something I did not before. In the first episode, when the guy on TV is talking to Carol, he said that there were the 13 left, but he figured it would be about 20 days or so and they would have that figured out. So, the clock is ticking before they come in with a solution and convert them all.

That is a huge plot point. Not sure how those human bodies are going to last more than a few months.
