And where did the "we can't kill" anything rule come from? That doesn't seem like a human concept. Thinking it is part of the genetic programming and the aliens may have more instructions in the future.

I think it is because the hive mind includes all living animals. But not plants, I guess. So they prefer not to kill one of their own?

It may be part of the programming, but I think it may also be tied to the higher-order issue of not being able to process aggression beyond a certain point without falling out into convulsions.

Killing an animal, even an insect, can be considered an aggressive act while harvesting grain or pulling up potatoes would not.

You know the chef is probably licking all the spoons and spitting in your food (to hopefully get you to “join”) while the women are also all pedos.

But hey, you got your liquor.

Yea I agree. It seems pretty explainable. Anyone engaged in any sort of transportation, medical procedure, or in a precarious physical condition would have a good chance of dying if everyone locked up all at the same time.

I believe there would be a shitload of fatalities, I just don’t think it would be 10% of the global population.

Car accidents would probably account for most of the deaths. Google tells me that the average human (globally) spends 78 minutes per day traveling, regardless of travel method. So that’s about 5.5% of the population traveling at any given moment, not all of whom are actually driving. Many will instead be riding bikes, riding trains, or flying on airplanes - all of which are likely safer places to be at that moment than driving. And then an even smaller percentage will be driving at speeds where the resulting crash will be fatal. I wouldn’t expect all or even most of the people on the roads at any given moment to actually die. Significant injuries, sure, but many if not most should survive.

Aside from car crashes, I’d guess the second leading cause of death would just be people who fell over and hit their heads.

I think there’s more to it than obvious causes of death. 10% just seems like an intentionally high number. But I may be overthinking it, so who knows.

Kinda a slow third episode. It seems that Carol has an aha! moment at the end though.

They say they need to take over her mind to save her from “drowning”, but are ok with giving her a live grenade or nuclear weapon which could destroy herself and others. This seems counter intuitive to their biological imperative. Why can’t she ask them to develop a means to reverse the hive mind and deploy it herself? Is that what she realized? Or something similar?

Bruh, they're a hive mind...all of your women would also all be top-shelf chefs. They'd all be the "best chef in the world." Everyone would.

I caught the first couple episodes this past weekend. The show is weird as frick, and very VG. But I am digging it and can't wait to see where he goes with it. Plus, I like that (at least on the surface so far) seems to be pretty unique. It's definitely holding my interest.

I'm not sure how they can string this out for four season, but I don't care...I also didn't think a show about a pretty minor character in BB would translate very well, and I was completely wrong on that (and I liked BCS better than BB overall). So if there is anybody I trust fully to flesh this shite out really well, it's VG.

I'm not sure why some people are struggling with the "10% of the world population died during the event" thing. There are almost literally endless reasons that someone could have died during shite hitting the fan. 10% of people dying isn't that big of a deal.

Random thought: I always wonder about shite like this and how it would affect those still-primitive tribes in the Amazon and that kind of shite. I know this show won't address that, but I wish it would be addressed sometimes because are they all dropping dead and zombie-like now too? Or are they just hunting and gathering like any other Tuesday?

They can’t hunt if they are part of the hive mind.

Yes, no shite. You missed the point of my question. I'm curious if something like this affects them at all since they are so isolated, or if they are just going on living life like normal.

I see. I’m not sure why the hive mind would skip over primitive folks.

One thing that Vince Gilligan does very well is write unlikable characters. Marie Schrader & Chuck McGill come to mind. Interesting that he went that direction with the main character this time. I’m all in and will be curious to see how it goes. I figure Carol will turn it around eventually but who knows! That’s what makes watching it develop so fun.

I think that was the point of the hand grenade stuff.

The virus is essentially alien technology based on what it is and where it came from. We don't know much beyond that apart from the occasional bread crumb.

The hive mind doesn't understand the nuances of human personality - it operates on imperatives and efficiencies distilled from general knowledge. They know what sarcasm is, they just don't understand it. Something was lost in translation.

When you combine the hand grenade and the grocery store, she's realizing they can be manipulated and she probably doesn't need the other 12 normies to form a team to battle the ant farm.
