Ok so after episode 3 I have decided i’m doubling down on this being about the danger of AI. Especially after the chat about a nuke

Gilligan has already stated that it's not about AI. He started writing this over a decade ago from what I remember.

Watched Ep1 last night.

Very fun/wild/tense hour of television. Wanted to keep going but I was tired and feel like this is one that's going to need my full attention.

Can't wait to get caught up so I can chat in the thread.

Edit: Anybody tell me what page episode 2 spoilers start?

Wasn't blown away by episode 3 the way I was 1/2 but I'm still excited for this show. I keep thinking about preparing the population for an alien invasion with a placated, happy, obedient populace but that seems a little trivial for Vince Gilligan.

Yeah third episode was pretty boring, but I still enjoyed it. And someone nailed it when they mentioned VG making the lead so unlikeable. Carol sort of fricking sucks. Yet at the same time shes dealing with this the way a lot of us may I think.

I’m not sure what her end game with the nuke was. It seemed like she was trying to figure out if there was a “too far” with them or how to make them tell her no. But she already knows there are certain things they won’t do (i.e. kill). So she could get a no by simply asking them to shoot a dear or step on a roach or whatever. But I suspect she will try to use their collective naivety to somehow gain an upper hand at some point. Just not sure how that will work since it all feels like they are being nice to her simply to placate and patronize her. It feels like at any moment that niceness could shift and she isn’t really in control of anything.

It does bug me that she isn’t really asking good questions to figure out WTF is going on though. She started to ask a little bit then she took over and answered for them instead.

How many episodes are in S1?

They also said, "think of it like this, if you saw someone drowning wouldn't you throw them a life preserver?" Being how she's supposed to be smart, All she had to reply was, " but it's their choice to take the life preserver or not"

Agreed. I was disappointed that this wasn’t her response.

Watched 3 episodes so far. Liked the 1st 45 mins of this show but everything else seems made for a different demographic. Not sure if i can do 9 hours of self righteous angry all the time person monologue.

My guess is the show is largely about her anger issues and how this strange, new world is going to force her to deal with them.

She's a miserable count, her default is to be angry and self-righteous in (and about) her anger. She now, literally, has the entire world bending over backwards to please her and that makes her even more angry.

Along with that, it was just pointed out to her (or at least allowed to be inferred) that everyone in the hive mind is happy and content because of their membership in it. That is diametrically opposed to her default bitchiness.

She failed at creating a movement with the English-speaking immunes, which made her angry, so she tried to reach out to the guy in Peru who is keeping his distance. His keeping distance from the hive mind probably kindled the idea in her that they were of like minds, so she would finally have someone to join up with and try to fight this. But he outright rejected her (he may not have known she was an immune), which... of course... made her angry.

She can only express her anger to a certain point or the hive will spaz out for a few minutes and millions of people will die. So already she is having to limit her pissy outbursts, and that -of course- also makes her angry.

Her conversation about the bomb seemed more about trying to find a chink in their armor of collective happiness. She seems to feel that their happiness and contentment can't possibly be real (and it may not be, but that's not the point) because happiness and contentment are fairly foreign to her (unless she's watching Golden Girls... maybe?).

I think she's always been bitchy. We saw that in the pre-infection and the ice hotel flashback.

But her present antagonism is pretty understandable given:

(1) this virus killed her wife/partner
(2) it destroyed her purpose as a writer/artist
(3) the collective "we" is working around the clock to fix the glitch that made her immune even though she has insisted she doesn't want to join the hive or have her individuality destroyed.

The voice actor for this character is listed as being on the next 6 episodes with his mother on at least one episode, so I think it was more about the not knowing she was immune. I think her derogatory comment about his mother right before hanging up probably makes him start to realize she was a lot different from the attempted contacts by the hive.

Obviously based on the other immune we have seen so far her anger and interpersonal shortcomings aren’t behind her immunity, but I think they are both keys to her not being sucked into what the hive is offering. It also scares them and may trigger the individual fighting for control like a reversal of them being taken over. They give the others family drones or sex drones & Air Force 1 and so on to keep happy, pacified, and/or distracted, but she really hasn’t yet bit on much they have thrown at her. Not letting go of her lesbian pirate fantasy hive member may end up causing her an issue later.

What motivation does the hive have if inherently happy without any negative motivations or a sense of self with no other goal but to keep as many living for as long as possible using less resources. What are they working to build back up in the areas and cities where one of the 13 doesn’t live or travel to. What the hive is doing the entire day across the globe has just been explained by the ones trying to keep the 13 fat and happy. Is that truthful or maybe is it accurate if the drones are clueless?

At a minimum they have at least already been made easily conquerable and ready to be enslaved in the name of making their conquerers happy and not killing them, but this all could be something fully controlled by the sender of the code to prepare the planet and its people for their arrival with a lot being done by them we have not been allowed to view yet.

13 people across the globe should not be as much of a focus to convert or to keep happy unless both are keys to reversing this and shows the hold on people is more tenuous than it appears. If not a key to making hold less tenuous they would be ignored unless actually getting in their way.

How much of sense of self is kept by a drone but just pushed to background isn’t really known yet as well.

This could also be an homage to The Boiler Room where Ben Affleck is coaching up his new salespeople in a very effective way.

I am confused, or missed something, E2 ended on the tarmac as she's flagging down AF1, but E3 doesn't pick it up there. Maybe later?

Rick Steves mentioned twice in the dialog in E3, two completely different scenes years apart. I'm guessing he makes a guest appearance at some point.

Seems the consensus is that episode three was a little bit of a letdown. The shock of everything is starting to wear off, but Carol still hasn’t eased up on the bitch pedal. I get it, she’s still angry and all that stuff but it’s getting a bit tedious.

At some point, she’s gonna have to come around and grasp the situation. Her asking the same general types of questions over and over again and then. “OMG how could you people think I really meant that?“ Is getting lame.

She’s pissed off the remaining humans and still is acting all defiant and tough. Yawn.
