I gotta say, watching black Twitter melt over Frances mcdormand & Hopkins winning is quite funny.

I'm glad I didn't stay up for the ceremony, but I'm kinda sad I missed out on that ending. Chadwick Boseman was seen as such a sure thing that the producers of the show decided to wait until the very end to award Best Actor in a Leading Role. I suppose the feeling was they'd send the show out on an emotional high note. Bad plan for two reasons:

1) Oscar voting can often be unpredictable (Hopkins win at the BAFTA's should have sent warning signals)
2) Joaquin Phoenix was your presenter and that dude is a freaking wild card

I find it hilarious that Hopkins was at home, asleep in bed, when his name was announced. And I find it even more hilarious that the show came to an awkward and anti-climatic end when Hopkins was announced as the winner.

Didn’t watch but reading the snynopsis of all the nominees and the foreign film winner, Another Round, sounds good. Might have to check it out

Tuned into the Oscars pre-show for the 1st time in years and holy cow....now I know why I haven't watched it in years. I'm all for representation.... but after 30 minutes in, it's been 85% black. Heck, BET Awards has more "diversity" than these "awards". They are over doing it.

I ask any minorities in this thread. Are you OK with the current trend? Is this kind of pandering acceptable to you or do you feel its overkill?

Are you Ok with a part of society right now "taking you under their wing" and pumping the word out in the way they are

Didn't watch but wish I had seen that . I did see on the news that Hopkins released a video with his acceptance "speech" this morning.

What a screw up by the Oscar people to reorder the ceremony. It is embarrassing for everybody.

I'm curious as to whether there are black Americans who are kind of sick of being force fed "themselves" by white media execs.

Meaning many grew up in an era where most of the entertainment (save maybe music) was tailored to white audiences, something that...makes sense considering the country is mostly white. And yet, I'm sure many/most still enjoyed those movies, tv shows, etc. And now, they're beating you over the head with things that are supposed to represent you and it's got to be a big departure from what you grew up with. And, frankly, a lot of it isn't very good, because the focus is on representation and not art/entertainment.

Anyway, I could just see there being some black movie buffs out there or whatever who are kinda missing what they grew up with, and also probably missing the interest/joy that came from a genuine portrayal of the culture/family life/etc. that they may relate to, even if in much lower quantity.

I didn't watch it but from what I am reading here they are doing the same thing I have been noticing my entire adult life. And that is instead of simply correcting a legitimate issue and making it right, they over compensate like crazy and basically commit the same wrong from the other end. You would think we would eventually learn but so far not at all

I think we should do the M/TV Board best movies of all time again.

I am putting my money on

DW Griffith’s “Birth of a Nation” and Leni Riefenstahl’s “Triumph of the Will”.

Coin toss who wins.

Francis McDormand is the new (and so much better) Meryl Streep. Both have 3 Best Actress wins IIRC.

Glenn Close is the Susan Lucci of the Academy Awards. Eight or nine nominations now and zero wins.

They've been married for the better part of a decade, IIRC.

All award shows are on the verge of fading into obscurity like the major beauty pageants.

Honestly, they should have been done away with ages ago. Regardless of the racial issues, it’s always been more political and about schmoozing then actually being the best. Not to mention subjective AF.

Some awards are still subjective but you can sort of understand the logic most of the time (like MVP or The Heisman in sports), but this is one you can easily win or lose just be being liked or hated by the wrong person.

The Oscars really shouldn’t mean as much as they have because of that. Not to mention Hollywood’s disdain for blockbusters and science fiction. You cannot tell me that either Nimoy or Montalbán didn’t at least deserve SOME mention for Wrath of Kahn.

Ah, yes. The age old "I'm Staggeringly Enlightened, and Everyone Whom I Disagree with Is a Racist, Toothless Yokel."

I watched a lot of those reaction videos to Luke showing up in the Mandalorian. Women, African-Americans, all of them LOVED seeing him. Black fans shouting, “That’s my boy Luke!” made me feel ecstatic that they felt the same way we do. The female fans were almost in tears of joy over it.

It’s almost as if those making decisions never bothered to ask black or female fans anything and just threw this stuff at then. Yes, they loved seeing an original character and movie around African culture (Black Panther), and I totally get that. None of them wanted to turn, say, Thor into another race. They wanted their own heroes and they wanted them to have their own hero’s journey, not instantly be awesome at all things.

When I read this I was thinking the same. And how about Patrick Stewart when it comes to the Emmys?
