The British Academy of Film and Television awards were held on the other side of the pond today, and Christopher Nolan’s biopic dominated with 7 BAFTA awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor.

I didn't think it was anything special. Solid film, nothing more. Are there no other good choices from last year?

Surprised by American Fiction getting Adapted and happy to see The Boy and the Heron get Animated. Bold choice not to even nominate Gladstone.

I think every poster that watched The Holdovers enjoyed it. Streaming on Peacock.

Anatomy of a Fall is worth checking out, but you have to be okay with it being 50/50 French and English.

Godzilla Minus One had the best theatrical run of any Japanese movie and my pick for Visual Effects. 100% Japanese but not available to stream yet.

Finally saw it last night because it arrived on Peacock...with all the hype and anticipation, it was underwhelming.... Maybe the big screen would help.

At least it was 10x better than fricking Barbie. The low IQ crowd (target audience for that awful commercial sold as a movie) is crying over Oscar snubs. Good grief.

It is not the size of the screen, but the quality.

This is not Nolan's best work by a long shot, but so much better than everything else this year.

It is a solid film and nowadays, that is rare.

Godzilla minus one should be one the best films of the year. And it only stands out because it is a solid movie that happens to be a Godzilla film.
Solid means good writing & drama with characters that have depth.
Minus one had all of that and a giant, nuclear lizard.

The Holdovers is incredibly elite. It’s a movie I didn’t know Hollywood still had in it.

Agreed. Put it in the lower level set of my Nolan rankings.

Barbie was mildly entertaining when I expected hot garbage. It doesn't deserve to win any Oscars.

Cillian Murphy is my favorite actor. Dude is just great at it.

I had read the Pulitzer Prize winning book, "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" and it's a masterpiece.

Figured this would be right up my alley but strangely couldn't really get into the film. The storytelling is off-putting.

I loved it. I don’t fancy myself a critic or watch a ton of new movies, but it was easily my favorite film of 2023.

I only recently watched Poor Things and The Zone of Interest, both Best Picture nominees. I'd have to rank them as my two favorite 2023 movies and I'd like to see one of them win, but I doubt either will win. I've seen eight of the ten nominees. I think these two are the most daring and should be rewarded. Sometimes it works out for the more obscure underdog, but this year feels like its gonna be a favorite.

Agree. It was okay, but I don't see myself wanting to watch it again.

took me 3 sittings to get through it.

just not my cup of tea. was expecting a bit more regarding the 2 bombings and they were just 'oh we did this' and a footnote to the movie.

Best film that I saw last year. I really enjoyed it, but it also benefits by comparison. If Oppenheimer had been released 10+ years ago, it would struggle to make the top 10 for the year.

Because the movie wasn't about that, and that should have been plainly apparent from the entire marketing of the film.

Its my favorite movie I have seen in awhile. Stunningly good film, imo.

Seriously. No shite question here.

Does this movie even qualify for Oscars? I think the entire cast is white, isn't it? Aren't there a bunch of rules now about gays, blacks, trannies and various assortments of the downtrodden who have to be involved in movies now, either in the cast or behind the scenes?

I wonder if this movie meets that threshold.

Get out with that. The Oscars best picture nominations from 10 years ago was:

12 Years a Slave (winner)
American Hustle
Captain Phillips
Dallas Buyers Club
Nebraska
The Wolf of Wall Street

Oppenheimer would win best picture if it was nominated that year as well.

They wouldn’t nominate a movie that couldn’t win. The requirements include the crew, not just the actors.
