Its nonsense, hollywood will eat it up, but the Overton Window has shifted right, I don't think this will be an audience hit

Maybe, but everyone's always asking for original films so here you go. PTA is one of our great directors. Go support it

However, it sounds very political so I'll be excited to see how this board feels about it

I am so very tired of politics invading literally everything I try to enjoy these days.

I'm just going to rewatch Airplane!, Smokey and the Bandit, and Spaceballs on repeat for a while.

I really like the actors involved but I hope the description misrepresents the political tone.

After Warfare’s box office performance, I suspect everyone likes the idea of an original film more than actually watching it.

If the movie is overtly about political things, what's your beef with discussing it?

Considering its largely based on a book, I doubt it.

From what I have read, the politics of "anyone right of mao is a fascist" is deeply engrained in the film.

That's fine. I'm sure its great. I am used to things not being on my political side, I'm just not going to see one that is this overt about it

Thomas Pynchon books always have social and political commentary but done in a very tongue in cheek, farcical way. PTA did a fantastic job with Inherent Vice staying true to the book. I haven't read Vineland but I suspect that the revolutionary aspects of this movie would be treated in a similar way as Inherent Vice, as in, confusion reigns and there's a "WTF is going on?" atmosphere to the story. If the movie treats revolution in a similar fashion to Hail Caesar! it'll be fine. Yeah, the fake Hollywood revolution sympathizers like Spielberg might love it, but they're completely unserious about actual revolution living behind their guarded mansion gates.

You'll notice the leftists are "activists" while the righties are "fascists"

You're expecting a movie overtly themed to comment on modern politics to not bring up discussion of said politics? Sounds like an issue with your expectations.

A new PTA and the worst posters are boycotting? Sounds like a win-win.

I have seen everything DiCaprio has done and everything PTA has done. I will see this one, but I have absolutely zero desire to see it right now and I feel like I'm probably not alone in that.

Not to mention, we went through an all-out media assault before and after the Joker release about how dangerous it was. This has way more potential to cause exactly what they feared back then, but they'll never say it.

It's just extremely bad timing (not PTA's fault) and based on the reviews, it probably should've been delayed.

I don’t think you are and I think you are perfectly valid for feeling that. It was mostly a joke referring to the One Battle thread I had bumped right before this one was created. Most had decided to skip it days before the assassination based on a Spielberg review alone.

It is a political movie. . .how do you talk about it without engaging the politics?

i think this one will be, especially with Leo and Penn involved and considering the source material was an anti-Reagan book.

that being said, people way overreacted and put their personal biases about the political tones in Get Out, Civil War, Sinners, etc. in the past that didn't turn out to be that bad.

Boys and Watchmen series on the other hand..

Yeah, I remember when all those previous, less overtly political PTA movies got crummy reviews. There's probably no merit to this one at all.
