FMJ kills off its only interesting characters before the 2nd half of the film then tries to carry the rest with the comedic relief guy from the first half and it just falls flat.

I never looked at it that way, but the clues are obviously there that cowboy is the main character but your still not prepared for him to lead the movie after the deaths of the 2 best characters.

He was also the showrunner for and directed three episodes of Ghe Sympathizer this year. The show was quite good.

And The Handmaiden and Decision to Leave were among the ten best films released in their respective years. If anything, he's getting better.

Though wondering what he knows when this was published is fair. He was 25-26 in 1999. His first good movie, JSA, hadn't even come out yet.

Have you watched The Little Drummer Girl? 2018 AMC show with Florence Pugh based on a John le Carre book. Park directed all 6 episodes.

I do think it's interesting that he goes after Psycho (and I'm not saying he's wrong) because you can clearly see the Vertigo influences in Decision to Leave and Stoker is very Shadow of a Doubt.

Imagine you don't know the premise of this list. Never thought I'd see those two movies side-by-side in a Top 10 list.

Ehhh....there's a lot more and significantly the circumstances of when it was released, the do's and don't s of the horror genre and cultural impact.

I hope he doesn't think Jaws is nothing more than a rubber shark and a theme song.

The first half of Full Metal Jacket is awesome. However, the second half falls somewhat flat. Could've been so much more.

He's spot on with most of that list.

His big misses are including Psycho and Citizen Cane. His critiques of those two only make sense if you completely remove the historical context from them both and that can't fairly be done.

a week after I went in the Navy and was at Boot, my parents watched full metal jacket and my mom freaked the frick out. 1st chance i got to call home, she started crying and i laughed my arse off about it.

I thought FMJ was a very good movie - and i though the war portion was really good.

He's right on FMJ and Thin Red Line. He's wrong on Lost Highway. Dark City is hardly even a cult classic, much less something that could be overrated lol.

Natural Born Killers is straight dogshit, so any praise it gets is too much.

i wasnt aware natural born killers was 'overrated' or 'underrated'.

i saw it in the 90s along w/ true romance, romeo is bleeding, etc. all had a similar theme running through them and i didn't particularly think NBK was a breakout in any way.

I'm assuming he posts here.

Does anyone know what sock puppet name he's using?

I've never considered Natural Born Killers to be that highly regarded. It's interesting, but I wouldn't call it good by any means
this!

why is it even in the conversation?

seems like he just picked a random run-of-the-mill 90s movie and added it to the list for whatever reason.

eta and frick his opinion of dark city. that movie is awesome!

He makes some excellent points.

Full Metal Jacket: he is spot on and expresses what I have always thought. The first half is some of the best cinema ever to hit film, but the second half can be a chore to get through. It's not bad, not even close, but it is a far cry from the greatness of the first half.

Citizen Kane is probably the best film ever created from a technical standpoint; however, if you don't know the full history behind the making of this one then it's a dud. It's not interesting otherwise. I love it, but only due to understanding and appreciating what Welles did in regards to Hurst.

Psycho is an OK movie. This and Vertigo I believe are highly overrated Hitchcock movies.

He is wrong on Dark City though. This is an underrated gem.

I agree 100% with Natural Born Killers though. It's terrible. I didn't think it was rated highly enough to be overrated though.

I don’t agree that FMJ drops off, it just becomes a different movie. But I am in the minority on that.

Since like 4/5 people feel that way, how can it be so overrated?

Some of the movies aren’t exactly on the GOAT movie list. They must be overrated in certain circles. Odd list.

I agree.

When I first saw it I thought the 2nd half sucked/was boring.

But I watch it now, as an adult, and it's good. Just different. It is kind of heavy handed with the whole "you're in hell" inside the building at the end, but the first half is heavy handed, too (requiring its own suspension of disbelief)

And NBK was never regarded as a particularly good movie. Now, I watched a lot of movies and started developing a palate in middle school, and I remember watching this movie with my bff at the time and we thought that, since it was so non-traditional and transgressive....but we were in middle school. If Oliver Stone thought making edgy content for middle school kids was this great artistic expression, then he knocked it out of the park.

FMJ is fantastic start to finish, but I think the first half definitely appeals to a younger guy than the second. And I think as you get older, the second half gets better and better.

The first half is just so quotable and shows how these killers were created. And the second half shows them in action and also them dealing with the tenseness, stresses, and horrors of war.

And any portion of a movie with fricking Animal Mother in it could never be considered a "dud."

If this movie wasn't introduced to boys just as they were learning to cuss, I don't think the first half would be so revered.

I realize that The Thin Red Line isn't for everyone, but I love that movie. Beautiful film.
