Got about 90 mins into it last night and have enjoyed it. It's better than I expected so far, but as others have said takes some time to get rolling. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing though. I've already said, "this is a better movie" at least 4 times to my wife.
yeah. i got about 30 minutes into it this morning before work and even just the Iceland scene with Aquaman was better fleshed out. I don't remember the scene hardly at all from the original, so i guess that says something.
i have a very rare evening to myself tonight so i'll probably knock it out then.

That 4 hours flew by. What an incredible improvement over the Whedon version. We deserve more of this cast together. And holy smokes was Leto's Joker night and day better than the Suicide Squad turd. Studios need to learn their lesson to stay out of the freaking way.

My son and I enjoyed the heck out of this movie. There were a few eye roll moments, but that's in any super hero movie.
My question is, and sorry if it's already been asked/answered, but why would Martian Manhunter need to go see Lois?

I couldn't figure out anything to do with Martian Manhunter in this movie. I couldn't figure out why he pretended to be Martha Kent to see her or why he waited until after the events to show himself to Wayne.

Can someone explain to me how Steppenwolf betrayed Darkseid?
If it’s explained in the movie, I missed it.
I was a bit confused because they don’t address it (or I missed it) and they show a character who looks a lot like Steppenwolf lay the final blow to Darkseid in the battle vs the old gods. So I assumed that was Steppenwolf but after reading this thread, I’m wrong.
So curious as to how Steppenwolf betrayed Darkseid and if it isn’t explained in the movie, maybe some DC fans know from the comics

I think it was more of being a failure, than true betrayal. At least that's how I took it, but yeah that wasn't hashed out clearly.

It seemed like nothing more than an excuse to shoehorn Martian Manhunter into the movie. He’s presumably aware of what’s going on with Steppenwolf and the mother boxes. Yet, rather than offer to help the Justice League, he disguises himself as Martha to convince Lois to go back to work, and only reveals himself to Bruce after Steppenwolf is defeated. Way to make yourself useful.

Zack explained this during the press tour. Basically, Martian Manhunter stays out of the fight because he wants the humans to figure it out for themselves. In Zack’s mind, he manipulates Lois and Clark to do their best and wants humanity to do it themselves.
But he provides assistance as he can along the way—we see this when he helps Lois in Man of Steel on the park bench, etc.

I agree to a point. That reach around line was pretty cringey and apparently that was an improv from Leto.

But he never says my b guys. He does quickly realize batman brought him back for a reason.

if you're serious, perhaps you should go watch it. but the reason is in the title.

The reason is never expressly given. However, I think one could deduce it had a lot to do with the fact that he had been dead and then resurrected. He returned confused and with no memory of what had transpired prior to his death. Seeing Lois brought him back and allowed him to remember who he was before he died.

Darkseid uses the anti life equation.
That’s why Lois is the key.
My bad, thought it was reference the nightmare future.

quote:
Steppenwolf first appeared in New Gods #7 (1972), and in this fateful issue it was revealed that Steppenwolf had a hand in starting the war between Apokolips and New Genesis, the twin planets of the New Gods. Apokolips was ruled by the evil Darkseid and was the home world of the dark gods while New Genesis was ruled by Highfather and was basically DC’s version of Asgard. The twin planets engaged in a war that burned for millennia and that conflict was kindled by Steppenwolf.
Steppenwolf was charged by Darkseid to murder the wife of Highfather (the leader of the forces of good on New Genesis), who in return led his forces against Darkseid. During the many battles, Steppenwolf was killed. Highfather became so bloodthirsty that he prayed for a way to end the brutal conflict. From there, Highfather became one with The Source (a mystical universal energy that ahem inspired George Lucas to create that thing he created) and renounced war. Darkseid and Highfather traded sons to broker a peace treaty as Highfather’s son Mister Miracle was sent to Apokolips while Darkseid’s son Orion was sent to New Genesis. The entire foundation of DC’s New Gods saga was laid because of Steppenwolf’s brutality.
The only article I could find assumed this was part of the backstory but it’s speculation. Interesting to know about it though.
But I think he failed him in battle previously like the other poster said

Just made it to the football scene. How did the Wisconsin Badgers football team get in this movie? Zack couldn’t come up with some other fake DC team? He had to go out and get a real one?
It gives the viewer a little reality overlay, and maybe sets up location more. It was late season, so maybe in B1G country (maybe even B1G member?). And Wisky is "good", so it sets Victor up as an athlete. You do it against a MAC team and you're just playing scrubs. You do what he did against Wisky, you're a Heisman finalist.
Gripes:
someone mentioned the music. I watched it with my son, and we agreed too. I was thinking it was a bit too melodramatic, but didn't say anything... and then my son brought it up near the end too. Marvel does a far better job of that, it fits and isn't heavy-handed. This got way too obviously emo at times with the tunes, would have been better had they scaled that back.
Ratio- so it was 4:3. Someone said they wanted an IMAX release, so I guess that's why? It didn't really make sense for a direct-to-TV project, but maybe that's the only way they could salvage some of the shots. It didn't bother me that much.
Story- I liked it better, overall. It was about as "different" as it could be, and still be the same footage. As I mentioned to my son, it does go to show that raw footage does not equal a finished movie.
Pros: I greatly preferred the Amazons, the Atlantis/Aquaman story, and Steppenwolf in this version. You got a sense that a full Amazon legion would have defended the box, but couldn't get there in time. In the Whedon version, it was just a massacre.
Atlantis setup with Mera flowed into the Aquaman story a lot better.
I appreciate that Steppenwolf never said "MOTHER" once
The Flash moment at the end got a little too techno-gobblely-asian, but I guess it worked. We'd have picked that apart more if this was the only release. I think they needed to polish it up some more.
It erased most of the humor from the movie, which I think helped. It could have used a little here and there, but not to the level Whedon went. And the final battle was way more entertaining, instead of Whedon's Power Ranger version.
The heavy hint that Darkseid is still coming (ala Thanos) is good, but I fear we're not going to get the payoff. The inclusion of the "other superhero" is also good.

There are rumors that AT&T (the owners of Warner Bros.) wants the Synderverse to continue should the Snyder Cut prove to be successful on HBO Max. It was AT&T after all who pushed for the Snyder Cut to be released in the first place - over the objections of the suits at Warner Bros. I should add.

And, oh yeah- I also liked the flashback to the old battle a lot better.
It was nice and democratic (non-political sense of the word) that the Amazons, Atlanteans etc were involved, but the Old Gods (Olympians) had that shite handled. Zeus and Ares alone took care of Steppenwolf and Darkseid, I guess they needed the mortals just to deal with the parademon army.

I disagree with this point. I want these heroes who have mostly god-like abilities to be portrayed in the most epic way possible.
Here’s an example from Whedon’s cut of a Marvel-esque scene:
Aqua man white stripes
I can’t stand pop or modern music being interjected like it was here. I think it also mostly ruined Suicide Squad’s tone along with the cheesy graphics and bad villain.
Example of the tone I like with music and mood:
Suicide Squad comic con trailer
This SS trailer feels like a completely different film from what we got.
The Man of Steel score is amazing to me. During many of the battles in that film, it was thumping away and really adds dramatic effect imo. Songs take away a lot of the emotional appeal for me
