Loved that they were able to incorporate Iceman into the movie as someone who has "protected" the career of Maverick. Rest in Peace Val.

ETA: My bad. Thought the baw was gone.

Two minor gripes. At the funeral for Iceman, the firing party was made up of Marines. Fairly certain that it would have been a Navy honor guard.

Also, neither Vice Admiral Beau "Cyclone" Simpson nor Rear Admiral Solomon "Warlock" Bates had (as a minimum) the Legion of Merit. The highest award they both had was the Bronze Star. Nitpicking, but definitely not realistic.

Just left. Fricking awesome. Almost the same basic formula as the first but somehow, tentatively, better. Felt like it had everything everyone who loved the first one could have possibly wanted.

This. After all the Lady Gaga ballad hype, I was afraid they were going to beat us to death with it, but I barely noticed it for the 50 Shades of Grey flight scene in the Mustang.

I told people they were overreacting about it being played constantly. It was an end credits scene just as I predicted.

I loved the fact that Maverick and Iceman had clearly become close friends since 86. I'll admit I got a little misty in their last scene together.

Said this in another thread...

Just saw it and it was good. The flying was amazing.

But I felt it was lacking compared to the original as far as character development and writing. I also thought the first was more realistic to the military where this had more of a regular action movie feel as far as the plot.

Not as good as the first to me except for the flying parts which were much better visually.

Plus, no quotable lines like the first.

I'll add since this is the spoilers thread.

I definitely thought the first was more realistic to real military as far as the mission, engagements etc.

There's no way you don't get shot down almost instantly with that many Sams being launched at you from that close. And why the hell wouldn't you have taken out some of those Sams with the 40+ tomahawk missiles you launched.

But it did give for some great action, just not realistic at all.

Still a really good movie with great action scenes.

2 curse words the whole movie.
—Ha! If you count “Sh-t” 50 times as 1 bad word
And the required PG-13 F-bomb

I overall gave you a downvote because I think this is better than the original. However, I do agree that it’s less realistic than the first - but that’s ok, it’s a movie. The first also had a guy using a Polaroid, inverted, 5 feet away from an enemy MiG.

My bad. Saw how bad he looked online and assumed he was already dead. Baw did not age well.

He’s been battling throat cancer IRL for much of the last 10 years.

Nope, he's still kicking. And I like how they incorporated Val's real life throat cancer into Ice having terminal throat cancer in the movie.

I would say that they were best friends.

And that was the one time that I teared up.

I know that he had makeup on but all things considered I don't think he looks that bad for 62 and battling throat cancer for the last decade.

Notice that he's wearing a scarf, obviously to hide the hole and trache in his throat.
