Has anyone challenged the apparent super-hero level hearing of walkers?
I mean, really, they can hear the quarry from miles away and are traveling toward it? Seriously, that would be audible for no more than a few hundred yards.
Let's not even get into the acoustics of a quarry
I know, just shut up and enjoy it

That's a pretty good point. Rick even had to tell Morgan to hush in order to be able to make sure he heard something.
They could have set this up comically all last season. The crew would randomly be complaining about not being able to sleep because of a humming noise. All season, we would keep asking each other what the frick is the point of it. Then, bam, quarry full of walkers.

I don't think that's it. They hear the noise from the quarry as they pass by. Not all walkers from the surrounding areas ended up in the quarry.

I guess this could have worked too.

Where are these explosives coming from that everyone keeps talking about?
You make them. If terrorists can do it, how hard can it be?

It still blows my mind that we havent seen a single moat/pit around any "community" yet.
Team moat ftw!

In meantime get a steam roller from where ever the local asphalt company is. Build steel mesh guards around it and roll it over the hordes in the pit.
I would pay good money to be the driver.
Or get one of those tractors from the place Glenn cleared. Find a combine somewhere and run them down like rows of corn
What happens when the ground becomes too slick with blood and guts for the heavy equipment to operate and you become stuck in the pit with the walkers?

Although you would think with Eugene being a genius he might be able to come up with something.

Not at all really. And I agree with whoever it was above that said that almost everything Eugene says makes me cringe instead of laugh. I get what kind of character he is, but they try too hard with him most of the time and it's pretty silly/stupid.
Right. I have never once found the show to be funny which is why it was so strange to hear an entire arena dying of laughter the whole time.
When Gabriel volunteered and Rick shot him down the place erupted

I laughed at that. I also laughed at Eugene's "hello" in the face of impending doom.

I was also wondering about the flares. They were attracted to where the flare was going rather than the noise of it being shot and the visual smoke, that was odd to me.
What was that movie where all the zombies stopped and looked at the fireworks when they used them? If the flares worked, I wonder if that would work.
I'm glad we finally saw a true horde though. Just think that trying to burn some first would of been a good idea.
Also, they had cars lining most of the roadway, except after the turn when they were closest to Alexandria. IMO that's where you needed the roads reinforced more than anywhere else.
Are there no tractor supply places or farm stores in that part of the country? They could have made barbed wire fences really easily and quick. While it wouldn't work for the turn, it would work for keeping them from the treeline.

Didn't they mention at one point that it was suppose to be a trial run but the situation escalated while they were there so they had to proceed with the plan? I didn't spend too much time critiquing there plan for this reason.

true, just Monday morning qbing, since there is too much to critique with my football teams plans.

They are in the country, you going to say they don't have fertilizer and tanks of diesel fuel, hell most farms would have both. Fertilizer and diesel was used in the OKC bombing.

Judging by how the walkers walked off the cliff earlier in the episode, they basically just needed to narrow the path to the top. Could use cars, build a fence, use shovels.
Yeah, I think they could have taken a lot out by putting a fence at a small angle, getting them all to walk towards it, and having them fall to their death. The fence would be pretty stable since a lot of the force would be directed off of the cliff.
Wait, what? Fall to their death?

They're already dead. And we saw walkers walk right off the cliff last night and get up at the bottom like nobody's business. Using the quarry to kill walkers isn't a good idea. But I like the idea of leaving alone (or killing excess walkers that escape) and using it as bait to lure walkers away from Alexandria. That's a good idea. Just need to reinforce the walls (and maybe widen the restraints) every once in a while, and kill stragglers that walk up or escape.

what happens when it fills up? or the horde gets excited enough by some noise or sight to push all in one direction, pile up against the fence and the knock it over or just climb up over other zombies to get over the top.
Hard to tell how many walkers were in there. I know they used 1000 real walkers (for the road scenes).
I think the media has reported 40k on several sites.
