Biggest takeaway I had from Black Phone is that it was more of a thriller than a horror movie.

It appears they are pushing the sequel to be more straight horror.

It was better than the first one in a lot of ways.

A lot of ways? In what ways, specifically?

I am genuinely curious, because I thought it was hot garbage.

Did you rent it or did you watch it for free and if so, where?

That’s crazy. I thought smile 2 was the best horror film of last year.

I have my ways, but let me tell ya, it's a supremely New York werewolf movie. Excellent cast. Albert Finney, Edward James Olmos, Gregory Hines, Tom Noonan, Diane Venora, etc. Excellent creepy film. I liked Howling better, but that's just me.

I'm on a Joe Dante kick so tonight it's Gremlins and Gremlins 2: A New Batch.

It was a relentless horror film. The opening is one of the best in a long time. The directing and specifically the acting, Naomi Scott, was the best in horror in a long, long while. Imagine an actress going from Disney princess to this. She went from Aladdin to this and absolutely crushed the role. If horror films weren't an afterthought to the Oscars, she should've gotten a nomination. It was the best performance in a horror movie since Toni Colette in Hereditary. The film took what worked in Smile and cranked it to 11. The ending was out of this world as well.

I'll give you that. I did like the opening scene. But:

I disagree with that bigly. And the end scene was just hilariously bad and stupid for me. But I also don't like over the top gore stupidness just for the sake of it (i.e. The Substance).

But hey, different strokes and all that.

No worries. It just really worked for me. That’s the beauty of horror. Plenty of different films for all to enjoy!

Interesting how this thread has differing opinions on Smile and Smile 2
I thought the first was interesting but the second one was not good - mostly because it was the exact same thing
Main character did a good job, though, I just felt it was a complete rehash of 1
Was hoping to get a little more monster backstory and screen time but nope

I mean, they are similar but completely different at the same time. They went farther, took more chances, provided greater scares, and just dialed up everything. The first one was fine, but the sequel went well beyond in my opinion. I do find the discussion interesting.

I thought they both sucked pretty hard

Watched Bring Her Back last night. Still unsure what to think about that one. It was a tough watch at times (not because it was bad, just some rough scenes). Kind of wish they had gone a little more into the Russian cult than the very brief clips we saw.

You don’t seem to like too many horror movies. What are your favorites?

Any of them from the 80s really hah. Check out Chopping Mall, that has some boobs. I’m watching Deadly Blessing, that has some boobs. Nightmare Sisters, Life-Force, class of nukem high, slumber party massacre, sorority babes in the slimeball-o-Rama, Hollywood chainsaw hookers, galaxy of terror, from beyond has peak Barbara Crampton in leather.

Non horror recs: the perils of Gwendolyn in the land of the yik yak (basically Indiana jones with tons of titties), Deathstalker (basically Conan the barbarian with tons of titties)

I like a lot of horror movies. A lot of recent ones have been really bad . Bring her Back was decent, watched it last night.

Of recent stuff, Oddity was fantastic. The Wailing is phenomenal. Heretic (more suspesne) was very good. Good Boy was great. The witch, train to busan, lights out, a quiet place, the conjuring, Hellhouse, LLC, When Evil Lurks, As Above So Below, the Descent, the Ritual. I really enjoyed Weapons until the ending just kind of sucked you out of the movie.

Halloween is my all time favorite.

ETA: With a lot of modern horror, my two main gripes and what turns me off of the movie quickly is when they can't actually come up with a way for something to happen and just force some decision as the only means to move a plot forward or when they can't come up with an ending and just go for some ridiculous, shocking display that borders on just ridiculous. They lack a lot of subtelty and nuance now (not limited to horror, most new big movies do). Barbarian is a perfect example of that. They go out of their way to show the main character as smart and hyper-focus on the good decisions she makes (locking doors when she goes into the room and zooming in on her doing it at least 5-6 times), but the second they need the plot ot move forward, they force her to not do the thing she has done a million times at that point. It just isn't good writing. Characters making dumb decisions is a horror trope, but you can't paint the characters as someone who doesn't make bad decisions, only for them to start making them when you need them to. Then, the second half of that movie once they get to the water tower, just completely took me out of the movie. There are parts of that movie I liked and I think in the thread on it I said I would have actually preferred if it had just ended before Justin Long came on the screen. Wouldn't have been a great movie but would have been a better experience.

Watched Fright Night and I love how utterly absurd it is. Probably my favorite vampire movie.

Damn, I absolutely hated Smile 2...thought it was complete trash. The first one was pretty good though.

I remember liking Black Phone, but don't remember much about it specifically.

I really thought Smile 2 was the culmination of the vision with a proper budget, I loved it. the scope of the world they built shifted with the budget and I was absolutely in.

One of the few films that has given me chills this year. When the insane fan demon was in her apartment standing naked in the dark, felt my skin crawl
