Yeah I almost bought it last week and realized I'd get it for "free" Friday so I held off. If it's as good as reported, I'll buy it anyway

Weapons is really solid. It is a pretty good adaptation of some classic Witch tropes and uses them in a clever way. I think it probably got overhyped for some, so don't go into it thinking it will be some masterpiece. it is just a really solid suspense/thriller.
And my comment on its ending, I don't think it was a bad ending. It will make more sense once you see it. What happens is very on brand for who the director is and his background, what happens just goes on for so long that it just deflated a lot of the buildup that happens. Felt the need to clarify because I didn't think the ending was bad.
I loved it. I'm an absolute sucker for good sfx work and it had some of the best i've seen in a while. Movie wasn't anything groundbreaking, it just did the simple elements really well.

Just saw a real hidden gem classic from the 80’s, I, Madman. It’s about a bookstore clerk who becomes obsessed with a pulp horror novel from the 50’s. The more she reads, the more it comes to life. Just an awesome film, great directing, great script, it even has stop motion animation. Loved it!

I've never even heard of that one and I usually think I'm pretty good with obscure 70's/80's horror films
. Will definitely have to check it out.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

It is on Prime, too. Going to give a watch.

It's good. I'm not sure one would call it very scary, but the story was good as well as the directing.

Decent little 80’s supernatural slasher. Some good jump scares in there. Definitely surprisingly good for a low budget obscure horror film as you said.

Nice! Here’s another, especially since this is tigerdroppings, Netherworld. It’s a Louisiana horror flick that’s dreamy, atmospheric and if you’ve ever played the Gabriel Knight series of video games, falls right in line with that. It’s more of a mystery with plenty of dark elements, voodoo, murder, sex, the whole nine, it’s really a neatly done movie. Could use more boobs, but sometimes you can’t have it all. Not sure if you could really call this a horror movie, but I dug the music and the atmosphere a lot even if it doesn’t really pay it off that much at all.

Did not know this. I will 100% watch it this weekend. I've been waiting for that to hit streaming since I saw the trailer.

I like a lot of horror movies. A lot of recent ones have been really bad
Agreed. I haven't gotten into the horror mood this year yet, and I think this is maybe a reason why, as I've been disappointed in it a good bit recently.
I did watch The Mummy (1959) a couple days ago and I actually thought it was pretty damn good. But I will watch Weapons this weekend so hopefully that kicks me off and gets me going into a horror desire.

Of recent stuff, Oddity was fantastic.
I may need to check this one out.

The Wailing is phenomenal.
Second this. I actually thought about rewatching that this weekend to get me into the horror mood. It is really, really awesome.

ETA: With a lot of modern horror, my two main gripes and what turns me off of the movie quickly is when they can't actually come up with a way for something to happen and just force some decision as the only means to move a plot forward or when they can't come up with an ending and just go for some ridiculous, shocking display that borders on just ridiculous.
I agree with this. It's one reason I am always hesitant with possession type movies, as those are the main culprits of the "movie is awesome for 80 minutes and then complete shite for the last 10" thing. The Devil Inside is always my go-to example of this.
I'll recommend a movie that is a little bit different from straight horror: Possum.
I watched it last year and initially didn't like it too much because it was VERY slow and almost boring at times. But the second half picks up a little and the climax is pretty good. And the creepiness of the spider puppet is really well done. I definitely appreciate it more after reflecting back on it now. I posted a little about it around page 18 or so in this thread.
And another one that I'll recommend again (since I saw it while looking up Possum) is Incident in a Ghostland. I'll warn again that it is brutal AS frick, but also really well done and another sort of different take on a horror film. I really dug that one.

I think you'll like Oddity if you enjoy suspense. As I said earlier, there isn't anything groundbreaking with the movie, it just does the basic things really well. There is a scene that is basically the basis of the movie and why everything is going down, that is just so well done. It really sucks you in and makes you feel like you are in the scene. If you have a good sound system, definitely recommend this as one to turn up the volume and turn the lights off. They do as good a job with silent space and subtle background noises as anyone has done in the last few years.

If you like slow burn atmospheric horror, check out the little indie gem by Ti West called, The Innkeepers. It's got young Sara Paxton, that dude from Kill List, and it's just a neat spooky haunted hotel movie that does a lot with its meager budget.

Below are three gems from Europe back in the nineties that I really loved.
First, we have a Danish film Nattevagten (Nightwatch) from 1994. A law student takes up an overnight security job at a morgue to help pay for school. An easy job, so he thought, but when a serial killer is on the loose and the bodies of young women start coming in, he gets closer than he'd like to solving the mystery or something.

Second, we have a Spanish film about a priest who learns the antichrist is about to be born, but he knows not where and when. To ingratiate himself with Satan, he begins to sin like mad in hopes of ascertaining the location to stop its birth. A really enjoyable horror comedy with some amazing characters and scenes. Lovely little film called Day of the Beast 1995. The trailer is terrible so here's a badass scene.

Third, we have an Irish film by Danny Boyle, Shallow Grave, starring young Ewan McGregor and that lady from Hellraiser 1 and 2. It's a film about three flatmates who take in a 4th roommate. When he turns up dead and they find a briefcase of cash, the three are tempted to keep the cash, but what to do with the body...or something. I'd show the trailer but it gives away the entire film so here's a clip.

Not a movie, but if anyone enjoys absurdist british deadpan satire, this short series is great. Made in the early 2000's to look like your classic 80's style. Weaves in a ton of different genres of horror and sci-fi and such. Stars a young Matt Berry and Richard Ayoade. On Prime I believe.
