Here's the irony: the Hatfields were Confederates from West Virginia, a Union state, and the McCoys were Union loyalists from Kentucky, a Southern state.

West Virginia was formed by the west half of Virginia seceding from Virginia so it could stay part of the Union during the Civil War.

Show pretty much lost my interest with the whole Romeo and Juliet part. And I know that was at least based on actual stuff that happened in the feud but it just rang kind of blah to me. Seen that kind of stuff before a million times in movies/tv.

And yeah, both sides have a lot of morons. I think because of Costner the Hatfields get a bit more sympathetic treatment.

- spoilers from reading up on the feud a little so don't proceed if you are historical spoiler adverse -

Hatfields pretty much owned the McCoys over all. I think in the end it comes down to the Hatfields have the $$ and the connections. And the competence that got them those things in the first place.

So the "river" they kept talking about crossing divided KY and WV? I know those 2 state militias come into play later in the story.

I would think more southern in the war JMO

Appalachians were settle by lots of Scottish and Irish. Probably why they made so much whiskey.

Different culture from what we think of the deep south. But I consider southern. Not sure what the folks that live there think.

Tug Fork. Yeah.

And if the ending of the Romeo and Juliet story is historically accurate, I'm looking forward to it. It's a good twist. But I actually like the whole real life American Juliet thing. It's really cool and really sad, when you think about it.

Appalachia is definitely a different kind of southern in general. No one there gives a frick what others think. They remind me a lot of the cajuns. They don't care much for the law, and want to live off the land around them, making their shine, and going about their business.

But wasn't R McCoy also a confederate? His brother, that was killed by Berenger in the beginning, fought for the Union.

Very good first episode, I agree that romeo and Juliet is overplayed, but it isn't really taking away from the show that much.
Also I feel like hatfield has his act together but the rest of his family doesn't. I also feel like the McCoy brothers are dumber than a box of rocks and the dad is not all there from the wall. I also think the lawyer is someone who is more responsible for all this crap than the others.

That's the way it's depicted in this series. In reading about them I've learned that Anse Hatfield was mean, selfishly ruthless, and relatively wealthy (as defined in those hard days), while Randall McCoy was mean, illiterate, and desperately poor after the war. They both passed those traits down, especially the meanness. You combine this with the fact that they all lived practically on top of each other, it's easy to understand why they fought.

Like someone else said in this thread, there were others that were in the same situations and fought as well, just not as infamous as these two families.

So far so good. 1/3 of the way through and I'm really liking what I'm seeing. Great cast, great acting. Hell some of the acting was so good I couldn't understand what those hillbillies were saying. God bless the dvr.
I also know why I can't stand West Virginia football fans and their $hity sportsmanship. So glad AU beat em two years ago and LSU got em last year.

Watched the first hour...missed the very first 15 minutes, forgot it was on.

One thing i noticed, the McCoy's are out manned.
Hatfields have Wyatt Earp,Curly Bill and Jake Taylor while the McCoys only have Morgan Earp.

Quote of the first hour. " i am prepared to do my duties as a wife but, i ask that you spend your seed outside. I can't bare another birth"

Yeah watching this show helps you understand the frickuppedness that is WV. Seriously, other than coal, what good has ever come out of that state?

Wait there is coal in west Virginia, I didn't know that. I thought they had to burn couches to stay warm.
