Television has defined 21st century popular culture. And with the rise of Peak TV and streaming, and the flood of film stars to the small screen, an ambitious and diverse new wave of storytellers have revolutionized the medium over the past two-plus decades.

To identify the best work of that period (as we did with books and movies), we polled hundreds of stars, showrunners, craftspeople, executives and other industry experts and asked them to vote for the 10 best series that have premiered since Jan. 1, 2000. (So don't expect to see “The Sopranos,” which debuted in 1999.)

Among the more than 500 people who responded were stars like Elisabeth Moss, Adam Scott, Bryan Cranston, Rose Byrne, Colman Domingo and Jason Bateman, and showrunners like Damon Lindelof, Lena Dunham, Lena Waithe and Noah Hawley. We are rolling out the results every day this week — we’ll reveal No. 1 on Friday. See how your favorite shows ranked, save the ones you’ve always meant to watch, and let us know what you think in the comments.

The list and its rankings won’t please everyone. This is intended to start conversations and lively debates, not to end them.
