I applaud John Davis for holding back.

Sure, he let it slip that the lead is a female hero.

But he didn’t mention that she is a black lesbian who was raised by an Asian caveman tribe after her biological caveman family were killed by whiteman raiders. Also, her best friend is a caveboy who loves to draw caveman dicks on the walls of caves.

She's also going to have to overcome the patriarchy to even be in a position to face down the Predator (or conversely, she leaves her village because of male oppression, even though she is the smartest, most talented, toughest warrior ever, EVER, and ends up alone and isolated to face down the Predator, perhaps after he destroys her village and its smug males.)

Maybe the character is this Lozen. Not just any Indian, she apparently had mutant powers

quote:

Lozen: A Gifted Warrior
In the 1870s, many Apache chafed at being forced to live on reservations. A group headed by Victorio, leader of the Warm Springs Apache, escaped from the San Carlos Reservation in 1877. Among the warriors at Victorio’s side as they eluded both U.S. and Mexican authorities was his younger sister, Lozen.

Though it was extremely unusual for an unmarried woman to ride as a warrior, Lozen was an integral part of the group, thanks in part to her special skills. Born in the late 1840s, Lozen had participated in a puberty rite that gave her the ability to track Apache foes. According to oral histories, the main source of information about Lozen was that her hands would tingle when she faced the direction of an enemy, and the strength of this sensation indicated how close or far away her opponents were. Victorio’s description of Lozen shows how much she was appreciated: “Strong as a man, braver than most and cunning in strategy, Lozen is a shield to her people.”

in #2, the "old" predator throws a flintlock pistol "Raphael Andolini 1715" at Danny Glover. Thats the start of your movie right there. Was even tried in the comics. God Forbid you go with a bad arse murderous pirate with a sense of honor in the 1700's to tell your story:

Raphael Andolini 1715

So that old Predator, he was the first. Andolini was a bad arse pirate and they killed his mutinous crew TOGETHER. Then they decided to fight to the death against each other. shite was even set in the West Indies since, you know, the predator only hunts in tropical climates, right? right? (sup Archer)

Give that script to Nolan or Peter Berg and you legit have a great movie. If you have to placate the mary sue crowd, use the Lozen as a female who cross dressed to join the pirates as a man (because, you know, they didnt allow women on boats like that back in the day) and then Andolini accepts her once he learns she can feel the enemy.

Boom. done and done. The predator gets the gun from Andolini after the carnage settles, lets the lozen live so she could see his funeral adn fade out, post credit scene to him watching danny glover kill his buddies grandson on the spaceship.

It works fine if it’s organic and well done - ie the character is a badass but not just because she’s a woman

Trachtenberg pulled that off pretty convincingly in his last major film 10 Cloverfield Lane. Michelle was forced into this fricked up situation but over time she built up the courage to do what she had to do survive and escape. That was one of my favorite suspense thrillers of the last few years so I 'll give the director the benefit of the doubt.

Another reason why I'm not shitting on it yet is some Native American women were pretty tough. Apaches in particular. Tough enough to beat an 8 foot tall alien...maybe not but Dutch used his wits as much as muscle to beat him so maybe this could work.

I don’t think there’d be an issue if we’re talking about an Emily Blunt type of character from Edge of Tomorrow. That organic kind of character worked very well.

A female hero could work if it pulled from the actual Alien vs Predator comic series where a woman who survived an encounter with both species was “adopted” by the Predators as a member of the tribe.

I don’t think it will be nearly that well thought out.

i mean they already made that movie

I really like terminator and alien/ aliens. I’m not gonna crap on a movie just cause a female lead. I crap on them if the movie sucks.

This is how I feel.

And then reality takes over and we find ourselves with a Hollywood that is remaking movies with shitty female actors, shitty dialogue, and shitty directors who make movies with shitty story telling.

And then we're all told that we are pigs for not liking this shitty movie. Over, and over again.

At no point did anyone really question Ripley's capabilities because she's a woman. Any doubts came from her being new, and was suspected of being a nut job. Ripley's defining characteristics weren't "infallible woman", which seems to be all that is required of a female lead in modern movies.

Wow, what an intriguing and unexpected creative decision?

This is going to be the way it is for the foreseeable future in Hollywood. If a man is going to be the hero, he will be a POC. If not, he will be weak and need a strong female to back him up.
