In a new interview with Collider timed to this week's release of Disney's Jungle Cruise, producers John Davis and John Fox revealed that Dan Trachtenberg's upcoming Predator movie will be titled Skull, will be an origin story about the Predator's first journey to this planet, and it's almost done filming.

The film will boast a female hero, "which I always think is interesting," said Davis, who revealed what Skull has in common with the first film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"It goes back to what made the original Predator movie work. It's the ingenuity of a human being who won't give up, who's able to observe and interpret, basically being able to beat a stronger, more powerful, well-armed force," he explained.

"It actually has more akin to The Revenant than it does any film in the Predator canon. You'll know what I mean once you see it," promised Fox, though Davis declined to reveal the specific time period. "You can use your imagination. It is... early."

Wow, what an intriguing and unexpected creative decision?

I expect great things from Predator: Rise of the Mary Sue

If that alienates the “target audience”, then the target audience isn’t worth a shite anyway.

As long as they pick a vocal man hater, this should be fine.

A female hero could work if it pulled from the actual Alien vs Predator comic series where a woman who survived an encounter with both species was “adopted” by the Predators as a member of the tribe.

I don’t think it will be nearly that well thought out.

I look forward to the main character looking up at the moon, talking to the predator and dry shaving her legs as she proves how tough she is, knicking her knee and bleeding

It works fine if it’s organic and well done - ie the character is a badass but not just because she’s a woman (Ripley in the Alien franchise and Connor in Terminator are perfect examples)

When the girl is added into a machismo type film or franchise just for the sake of showing “women can do it too” - it often bombs. Think of the new Ghostbusters, Terminator, and Transformers movies. That kind of stuff easily alienates the audience that typically sees those movies (young males)

While I don't think it's always a bad thing, it also isn't always interesting.

That thinking is exactly what leads to poor decision making overall.

"How's the plot coming along for your movie?"
"Pretty good, but, I don't know, I think I need more interesting things."
"Female heroes are ALWAYS interesting, even moreso than male heroes. Like way more."
"Why?"
"Because they are female, duh."

Yeah, good film does not work like that.

She's also going to have to overcome the patriarchy to even be in a position to face down the Predator (or conversely, she leaves her village because of male oppression, even though she is the smartest, most talented, toughest warrior ever, EVER, and ends up alone and isolated to face down the Predator, perhaps after he destroys her village and its smug males.)

The problem is typically the female empowerment narrative isn't very well thought out. The characters and their motivations are just flattened avatars without any interesting ideas or deeper metaphorical meaning.

I agree with this 100%, but I have no faith that they will pull it off properly.

Predator franchise is trying hard to make people forget how bad the Terminator franchise has become.

Riiiight. Can't one of the GOAT movies about a person fighting an alien killer if it's a woman fighting the thing. That would suck.

Oh wait...
