They cut a wide screen view of the scenes and it cuts out the jokes....

Old Scene:

New Scene:

I mean, the new scene is MUCH higher quality and the old scene looks like it was filmed with a turnip.

In the second photo, why is Jerry in the background too along with the couple walking down the sidewalk?

That's Jerry from the future dropping off the gift of HD video.

It's only a matter of time before they start cutting whole episodes.

I was so happy to hit play on episode 1 and see that it wasn't 4:3. I really wish that all older shows at least had the option for 16:9 or whatever it takes to fill the screen.

Disney did this also with The Simpsons on the app. They eventually added in both options.

Is this an exclusive rights deal purchase or just a rental of the property to show on their platform like they do with Friends?

Reason I ask is because I thought Sony owns the exclusive rights to the show.

TBS has been showing Seinfeld in 16x9 HD for like 10 years.

it's probably a different cut of the scene all together. look at george's hands. it could be the same cut with 1-2 seconds difference.

eta: and jerry's head is turned.

It's not exclusive right. TBS still shows it and Comedy Central added it as well.

There's a special place in hell for people who make video releases that change the original aspect ratio.

The framing is off in this new version. You should almost always show what the cinematographer intended, not whatever fits the current display proportions. (I'll make an exception for IMAX shots that get shown in 16:9 for home video).

All they had to do was rescan the film at a high resolution and release in 4:3.
If the philistines are annoyed by black bars on their tv, they can adjust their tv settings. Don't ruin the videos for the rest of us.

It's probably been 15 or 20 years since I've had cable. I run into this problem a lot with streaming sites. Pretty sure that when they added Saved By The Bell the other day, it was still 4:3.

For both of you? The Sitcom Cinematographer's Union is probably livid over this.
