My wife and I try to watch this movie every Fall after Halloween. There’s no clear setting as to WHEN the movie takes place but it’s obviously in the mid to late fall as the grandparents are closing up their RI home for the winter.

Depicted too chilly to be a Labor Day movie. Not cold enough to be a Winter movie. No elements of Halloween to put it in that category.

We watched it last night and I’m always impressed with Hedge’s ability to make the music and scenery one of the main characters. Creates a perfect amount of Melancholy but also nostalgia for being with your family.

One of my favorites and gets rare annual viewing with other classics.

Very good movie. Little Ruthie Draper turned out to be a smokeshow. It's the first movie I ever saw Emily Blunt appear in.

For me it was Charlie Wilson’s War

I remember strongly hating this movie but don’t remember a thing from it other than the “put it on my tab” line

Might deserve a rewatch

What is to possibly hate about this movie?

Also a Peter Hedges movie. Piece of trivia, the teenager from Manchester by the Sea is his son Lucas.

My favorite line is right before that.
“Why are you looking at me? (Totally Dan’s fault she left.)”

“He’s not looking at you. He’s just staring into the bleak void that is his future and you happened to be standing there. “

Seconded.

You nailed it. Really good movie. Perfectly fits November pre-holidays. We actually made this a Thanksgiving week tradition several years back.

Hot take: Marie was miscasted.

That little shake at the jukebox always gets me in trouble because my wife knows.

No idea. I was a dumb teenager when I saw it. I’ll rewatch this week.

I could very much see a teenager not enjoying this. My kids do though.

Their family gathering is similar to ours so it hits home in a good way for them.

I used to really hate Dane Cook too which probably played a big role in why I didn’t like it

Goddamn, I can’t believe that this movie is 15 years old now. Nice reminder to watch again, it’s been a few years since I’ve last seen it. I also enjoy this movie for the setting, and mood it creates.

Another thanksgiving movie that I love for mood and setting is The Myth of Fingerprints, but it’s decidedly quite a bit more melancholic than Dan in Real Life. I watch it every year around thanksgiving when the weather finally turns cool.

Is it on a streaming service anywhere? Never seen it, but the wife and I will give it a go if we can find it.
