I agree with your overall sentiment, but comedy "franchises" are notorious for this:

Ghostbusters II (not as bad as the haters suggest, but a big step down, regardless)

Caddyshack II (need I say more)

An interesting debate might be -

If Godfather 2 (one of the great all-time sequels) to Godfather 3 is the biggest step down between 2 films in a franchise, what else is close?

Matrix to Matrix 2?

American Psycho to (yes, there was a) American Psycho 2?

Jaws to Jaws: The Revenge?

Saturday Night Fever to Stayin' Alive?

Shame, because the stink from Exorcist II kept people away from Exorcist III, which is a far superior movie...

Yep. The irony is Exorcist III could've been more successful and appreciated had the studio just called it Legion like the novel, and left William Peter Blatty's story as is.

Forcing it as a follow-up to Exorcist II for the sake of commercial appeal actually had the opposite effect.

Pretty sure they were talking about 3, which is terrible.

Jurassic park
2nd one wasn’t bad. JP3 was fricking terrible all around…CGI, the script, and the casting outside of Sam Neil

The PG-13 version is terrible but the unrated version has some hilarious parts akin to the original. I don’t know why they ever released the toned down version it was terrible.

No way Major Leauge 2 is still quality.

2 isn't bad. It's just a big dropoff from 1.

Jaws 2 is a good movie, the rest are trash.

One not mentioned, although I don't know if it's a proper sequel is Dumb and Dumber. I haven't even watched the other 2 because I don't want to ruin my perception.

Lethal Weapon.

1 and 2 were great.

3 and 4 were just ok.

Kinda would pretty easily swap with JAWS and the sequels.

One that I did not see mentioned was...

Silence of the Lambs > Hannibal

Hannibal wasn't terrible, but it was nowhere near the level of the classic original.

American Graffiti 2

Stealth quality film, though it didn't touch the classic original. Only Ron Howard's domestic drama/protests plot line is a dud.

Blair Witch 2 comes to mind.

I don't know if it's ever been officially available in the US, but Battle Royale 2 is a real shiteshow.
