Most Powerful Films

Here are some of mine.
Schindler's List- Obvious reasons, but I stuck it through strong until the very end. Once Schindler broke down, I broke down with him. Such a great film.
Toy Story 3- Literally the day before moving over here and parting with my home, I watched this film for the first time with my family. I'm not sure if it was a good decision.
The Green Mile- goes without saying
Pan's Labyrinth- Definitely challenged my view of the fantasy genre.
The Grave of the Fireflies- I'd say this is without question the most powerful film I've ever seen and actually managed to completely change a viewpoint of mine, and its that of war. I can't say any other film has done this.

I thought Trainspotting was powerful in the sense of it not glorifying drug use and showing the harsh, shitty reality that can come with hard core drug abuse.

The Mission - The best film about redemption I've ever seen. And the struggle of ideals between Jeremy Irons and Robert De Niro at the end is brilliant. Possibly the most beautiful score ever as well.
have to go to work right now, but bookmarked to add some more.
ETA: City of God and Cinema Paradiso. Reasons to come later.

I've seen most of Kurosawa's post "Seven Samurai" films, but none of his films before then. Apparently I'm missing out.

No, that film just sucks. Powerful needs to be more than just the blatant.

Schindler's List and Toy Story 3 are good ones.

"The Shootist." Both character and actor dealing with end-of-life issues.

I think my first full blown cathartic movie experience was when I saw Dead Poet's Society. Not a universally reknowned powerful movie, but it was for me.
Also, Papillon.

this film was as close to perfect as one can get. Fantastic writing, direction, acting, cinematography, musical score, it is one of my favorites.
many great films being named here., and i would like to add some strange ones:
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, psycho, and The Exorcist.
Many people think of powerful films as being uplifitng or conveying a great message, but the terror these films inspired (in many ways, like slamming the audience in the gut with a sledgehammer) makes them quite powerful in their own macabre way.
