I’m pretty sure I’ve heard the actors didn’t know they were killing him off and the reactions from them in the scene were real. Is that true?
Heard William Christopher (Father Mulcahy) on a speaking tour some years afterwards say that they handed Gary Burghoff (Radar) the script to read right before they rolled cameras. His reaction was pretty genuine as well.

No "who shot JR?"

350 million people world wide watched that episode on November 21st 1980. 83 million people in the U.S. alone—a full 76 percent of all U.S. televisions on that night were tuned in.

Those are the "Patrick Duffy shower scene episode" numbers.

This was a great choice... and something you're never going to see nowadays, unless maybe HBO.
And notice that nobody ever considered Magnum "dark" or an antihero, even after that scene.

Re the OJ chase, and the 9/11 2nd airplane... if you go live news broadcast, there are a few others like that.

I saw the Channel 2 broadcast from the Baton Rouge Balloon Festival, where a hot-air balloon dropped from the sky behind the reporter while he was talking. That was a "whoa, WTF?" moment.

I saw Gary Plauche shoot Jeff Doucet live on TV at Ryan Airport.

I still remember CNN showing live coverage of those maniacs with full body armor and AK 47s shooting up the streets in LA. Just insane, like out of a crazy action movie.

And speaking of CNN, some of the live feeds from Desert Storm was intense as hell. Wolf Blitzer and Bernie Shaw broadcasting live from a Baghdad hotel as we bombed the city was as memorable as any WW2 broadcast.

Since we’ve thrown away the network tv thing.

On Justified, when for a few minutes we were all pretty certain Mags poisoned Raylan.

Breaking Bad...Walt unleashing the M60 he had hidden in the trunk of the car.

Very few scenes have elicited a visceral “holy frick” out of me like that.

If we’re talking premiums like HBO, The Red Wedding from GoT has to rank pretty high as well.

Just watched that scene and it intrigued me. How is that show "Supernatural"? I have never seen it. Is it worth a look. I don't usually tune in to the CW.....

Yeah. I will never ever forget that moment when you went from speculating about how a plane hit the tower and thinking that's a crazy accident to the shock of realizing this is a coordinated attack.

The two that comes to mind the most (that wasn't already mentioned)

How I met your mother when Marshall's dad died

And there is an episode of Scrubs when they do an organ transplant to three people and all three die unexpectedly and the scene was filmed very well and intensely.

Friday Night Lights has some good ones, but several scenes from The Son episode really got me, especially the funeral scenes.

Even the actors didn't know who did it. They filmed almost every actor holding the gun. Victoria Principal found out on a flight when the pilot cam on the intercom and said 'Kristin did it'.

Context within the series. Horror. Suspense. Sorrow. Impact.
The artistry of the director, camera work, and the actors. Near perfection. Can bring a tear if you're not careful.

There can only be one...
