At least keep watching until Clive Bixby shows up.

I put Modern Family #2 on my favorite sitcoms out now, behind Parks and Rec.

You really need to start from the beginning. Not only is the first season the best, but it also establishes the characters. After the first episode I thought I was going to hate Phil because he did unbelievably stupid things, but they just grow on you.

I'd watch an 8 hour miniseries of Clive Bixby and Bert Macklin, FBI together.

while some of the situations may seem a bit contrived (and they probably are since it is a TV show) I have heard the writers base the show off of their own families.

I can agree with this.

Episodes like this are what make me think of bumping Modern Family into the #1 comedy spot, but then there are episodes like Little Sebastian that lift Parks and Rec back to #1.
Its really a tossup for me.

Agreed. I can't understand why anyone would want to try watching a show from some random episode in the middle of it's run. There's definite character development you're missing out on.

Wouldn't be so bad if the tone of the show was supposed to be over the top or zany, like Raising Hope, but we're supposed to find humor in somewhat credible people and situations.

Its a hyperbolic look at family of our times aka The Modern Family. By definition, hyperbole is the use of exaggeration for emphasis; therefore, this show is definitely supposed to be over the top examples of situations that we can relate to. The mom is over the top OCD-mom, Gloria is over the top Colombian, etc.

That's the exact reason we've gone back and watched most of the first couple of seasons on DVD. We're about halfway through season 2 at the moment. We still watch the news ones when they air, but I don't think they would be as good as they are without the background.

it's good to me when they stick to the comedy, the feel good stuff kind of takes away from the show, and sometimes there are episodes with maybe 1 or 2 light chuckles and then focus in on the "Relationships"

It's just not funny enough. Gave it another chance... saw the "Bullfrogs" episode. Didn't laugh. The word "bullfrogs" is supposed to be funny? There's no way Mom could be stupid enough to not know her hubby's team is the "Bulldogs", especially when it's written all over his stuff.

So Dad takes his oldest daughter off to a college tour. The whole scene made me cringe. It wasn't funny and the girl is too constantly bitchy for the scene to be redeemingly sweet.

The whole thing rubs me the wrong way. It's stuck in the middle... not zany enough on the one hand and not realistic enough on the other. I'll just call it Meh Family.
