They were able to get away with it on the tail end of phase 3 only because they had established a well told story/universe pre-pandering. They capitalized on established success, where the audience was already hooked. With phase 4 essentially starting from scratch, if they continue to pander they will crumble. Personally I thoroughly enjoyed many of the marvel movies, but I’m not at all anticipating what’s on the horizon.

Adapting Marvel characters is now pandering

Also both BP and Captain Marvel made over a billion dollars so they know what they're doing

The good thing is this is America. You can start your own film company and comic book company and do strictly non pandering stuff.

Or, alternatively, just consume fare from companies that do stories that you consider totally non pandering.

Why does everyone freak out when the lead isn't a white male? Don't get me wrong, shite like the all female ghost busters was trash and clear pandering, but if you're making new movies I just don't get it.

You're just upset because they aren't pandering to you.

Blade is awesome.

You know why you're hating? Because some people always want to ice skate uphill.

Yeah. They’re taking character from one medium (comic books) and putting them into another medium (films). I don’t recall ever seeing a Black Panther, Captain Marvel, or a bunch of other characters (GOTG, Dr Strange, etc.) ok film before.

What does this even mean? They have to make up some new character from scratch and make a billion to “get back to you?” That’s dumb.

Black Panther grossed 1.3 billion dollars in the box office. If they made a black pantherette with Beyonce as lead it would triple the current highest grossing film of all time. Halle Berry in her prime would have easily done a billion dollars today. The right female lead and a quality script/actress and it would make straight bank.

They "got away with it" because they didn't pander.

Black Panther has been a character for over 50 years. Was the movie great? No, but he didn't take over any of the team films he was in.

Captain Marvel is similar. Long time character and she didn't really play a factor in Endgame other than getting Tony's ship and about 20-30 seconds of "girl power". At no point did it interfere with the rest of the movie. Ditto for BP.

How are they pandering? She-Thor? That's more likely to be a one-movie plot line than a series of films.

Sam being Cap isn't that crazy and we don't know if he's actually taking the Captain mantle yet.

The thing is, what can they do? I'm not complaining but they used all the best characters for the first run. You could make Captain Marvel a man, make Bucky Cap, remove Black Panther, and totally scrap the She-Thor line...I still wouldn't be as excited as I was for phase 1-3. Iron Man, Captain America, and Spiderman are probably the 3 best, most well known, and most well-received characters in the MCU. 2 of them are done and 1 has one movie left. ANY character they use going forward won't be as popular.

They aren’t going full on retard like Rian Johnson et all.

They’re trying to bring some of their more recent storylines to the screen to goose sales on them and, in turn, boost readership for the comics IMHO.

Stuff like FalconCap and JaneThor is far more recent than a lot of the major stories which have gotten cribbed for the movies like Infinity Gauntlet, which dates back to the early 90s, or some other stories which date back to the 60s or 70s.

Do I think this is necessarily their smartest move? No, as their readership dropped when they did a number of these dumber recastings of iconic characters. But there is at least a thought process behind it.

Giving the audience what they want. It’s an old Hollywood scam.

It would if the two best candidates weren't already portraying Gamoora and Valkyrie.

Their biggest issue is that they won’t have Iron Man, and Captain Marvel who were 2 major bulkheads and the axles of the MCU.

They bought the XMen so it will be interesting to see where they go with that.

Landon Spider-Man and a really good casting there helps too.

I don’t think it hurts that they sorta finally found their legs with Thor.
