Aren't the Netflix and Prime originals essentially cockblocked from the big 6 awards at the Academy Awards? I'll be surprised if Driver wins anything.

Not at all. There's plenty of examples of Netflix and Amazon movies being nominated for and winning Oscars.

Firstly, let me say that I very much enjoyed this movie. It’ll probably go down as one of my favorites of the year. But I don’t really fall into the category of thinking that it’s sad or depressing. Maybe I’m not the type of person who it’s aimed at. I come from a very happy home, my parents are incredibly happily married after all these years, my siblings have very happy marriages. So I took it more as a character study. The only part that was kind of emotional to me, I guess was the dude reading the letter at the end

And not only was ScarJo worse as far as acting goes, her character was a fricking bitch
It’s crazy that he was the one that cheated and I felt way more sympathy for him. She just sucks

I feel like damaged people or deadbeats would lean more towards Adam Driver’s side. The guy was a deadbeat. The MacArthur grant thing was a plot device to show how he could commute from New York to Los Angeles so easy. And hire high-priced lawyers
I would lean more towards being on Scarlett’s side. She could afford to give their son a way better life than Driver could. And she got cheated on. Really the only knock against her is that she owed her career to him

He had a show on Broadway with or without the grant. More importantly without her staring in it. Professionally he isn’t a deadbeat

He cheated on her after they were splitting up and he was on couch. It’s not right but we talk about plot devices, I feel that was shoehorned in to get you on her side or at least to sympathize more. If him cheating actually mattered to her, she’d have mentioned way before that or at least during sob session with the shrink.
She also didn’t frick him for a year.
In the end, it’s not really about taking sides because they just weren’t suppose to be together.
I just think her character sucked arse. Seems to me that she was very happy being the star of his plays but when her shine wore off in the theater she took it out on him at home.

Going to go against the grain of this thread. Fantastic movie full of great acting. Driver, Scarlett, Dern, Liotta, and Alda all give it their best shot and deliver. Small gripes. Charlie's affair feels like something that was added on maybe a second or third draft to even the playing field. An affair would nearly always be the primary reason for a divorce, but through Scarlett's interactions with Charlie and her lawyer I got the sense that it was on the back end, behind other reasons....that aren't really fleshed out? I guess it all came down to her wanting to live in LA to pursue acting, but even then she didn't seem too passionate about acting and really just wanted to be on the west coast. Even when the affair is thrown in I still found myself rooting for Charlie. I felt for him every time he wrote a check.
The hardest hitting moment of the film was in the final scenes with Charlie shows up in LA and we're introduced to the new boyfriend. The film established a strong relationship between Charlie and the Scarlett's mom, yet in this scene she is very distant toward Charlie. Gone are the long embraces and affectionate nicknames, replaced with cordial greetings and hurried exits. This was foreshadowed earlier in the film when Charlie's second lawyer told him he would lose relationships with her family.
I feel the shame. I was never emotional. The biggest reason might be that the kid was never emotional. He just kind of went with the flow and took everything in stride. He handled it better than both of the parents.

I really enjoyed this. Great writing and acting
With that said I hated Scarlett in this. She looked like a man and was a total bitch
Divorce looks like a bitch.

Did anyone else find the scene where Adam Driver just gets up and randomly sings at the bar kind of bizarre and out of place? And a tad pretentious? Idk just seemed odd. Solid movie overall though
Agreed, but it was really the only part of the movie I disliked. Good movie, not great, excellent performance by Driver, and good all around cast. I enjoyed Alan Alda which is something I haven't said in a long time. It's nice seeing a movie based on real life instead of superheroes and action scenes.

100% agree on the singing scene. It was cringeworthy and didn’t fit. Other than that loved it

No way a guy in real life who looks like Driver gets someone with ScarJo’s looks.
In a world where Pete Davidson just got through with Kate Beckinsale, the mind that wrote this has no idea what attracts women.

The fact they were together didn’t bother me at all. Scar Jo looked like a man so I can see it

Force a man to sleep on the couch and don’t show any affection then be surprised when someone else does. Typical bitch.

They did a distractingly amazing job of making Scarlett look plain to homely.
I found the closeups of her soliloquies to be annoying, and both musical numbers toward the end completely unnecessary.
Still enjoyed the movie though, and Adam Driver was phenomenal.

Yes, in the real world there are plenty of men who don't have movie star looks who have pretty, even beautiful wives. Happens all the time.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I did not like this movie. It's a big pile of unrealistic, unbelievable, try-hard meh. Not enjoyable. Did not arouse any emotions for me.
I still don't understand why people think Adam Driver's a good actor. I really don't. People claiming he might get an Oscar for this? WTF.
And the child-acting? Woof. Bad.

Drivers voice sounds like what a robot would sound like trying to imitate humans

I am torn on this one. I was in the same boat for a long time but then I have seen him in several things and he does a really good job with conveying emotions without having to say much which is a talent in itself. he does a really good job of his tone setting his emotional state also.
Watching the new Star Wars movies, he really seemed to shine more with very little script help. I found myself really liking his character in a movie called This is Where I Leave You and Lucky Logan. I haven't seen him in a lot of other stuff but I really like him in the stuff that I've seen him in. I kind of look at him like Keanu Reeves, seems like a down to earth type of guy that I want to root for.
