Hannibal Lecter was scary as hell, and so was Buffalo Bill. Silence of the Lambs is definitely a horror film. And - besides the Shining, it's probably the best acted and made horror film of all time.

I get why its on the threshold, but if it's not horror then many many movies on this list shouldn't be either.

One way I was kind of thinking about it, what was this movie a progenitor of - how many other films were spawned or influenced by its creation. Hard to argue that SotL has not had a tremendous influence on the following decades of horror.

Editing to respond to the rest of your post:

Agreed Jaws, Alien, Misery are horror. If Misery is yes, then SotL should be yes.

Aliens should be yes. The Menu should be no. Seven should be yes. SotL should be yes.

I used to love horror movies but I quit watching anything new past the early 2000's, so my list of favorites will be old. Are we having to specify a movie from a franchise?

The Exorcist
The Shining
Halloween
TCM
Friday the 13th
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Alien
The Thing
An American Werewolf in London
Psycho
Poltergeist
Jaws
The Amityville Horror
Christine
Carrie
Pet Semetary
Misery
Fright Night
Rosemary's Baby
The Omen
Hellraiser
Children of the Corn
The Howling
The Fog
Salem's Lot

ETA:
Silence of the Lambs
Misery
Cujo
The Lost Boys

Your yes' are a definite yes. I would say no to Aliens, the other 3 i would say generally yes but for the purposes of this tournament I am fine with no. It's the only reason I didnt nominate them..

and if it comes up later, The Terminator is a horror movie, T2 is not.

Thanks for the input. Good case for Silence of the Lambs. Scary "villain" and influenced a lot of horror. Also Lector ate up someone's face in it.

Updated:

Yes:
Jaws
Alien
Misery
Silence of the lambs

No:
Aliens
The Menu
Seven
The Terminator

I would have to hear a pretty decent case made for Seven and The Terminator to be added. Neither, especially Seven, are really scary even relative to the time period. Not that gore or fright is a requirement but to me they both tick more boxes to not be included or other genres than they do to be included.

Its a classic Slasher plotline wrapped in sci-fi. If Alien is a horror movie, and it is, so is The Terminator. AI can say it better and faster than me though

Key reasons The Terminator is considered horror include:

Relentless Slasher Dynamics: The Terminator acts as a classic slasher villain: unstoppable, emotionless, and incapable of being reasoned with. It stalks its victims, creating high-tension, claustrophobic scenes.

The "Final Girl" Trope: Sarah Connor follows the classic 80s horror "final girl" archetype—a vulnerable woman who matures into a determined survivor.

Atmosphere of Dread: The film relies on a dark, gritty tone, with heavy shadows, 80s synth music, and a tense, terrifying atmosphere.

Body Horror and Monstrosity: The final reveal of the Terminator's endoskeleton as it relentlessly pursues Sarah (a machine acting like a living monster) fits squarely within the horror genre.

Violent, Unstoppable Threat: Scenes like the police station massacre and the murder of Sarah's roommate, Ginger, in her home, mimic the intimate violence found in slasher films.

Unlike its more action-oriented sequels, the original film's focus on survival against an unnatural, relentless force makes it a cornerstone of 1980s sci-fi horror

If that is not enough, Cameron has said himself that The Terminator was inspired by Michael Myers and Halloween.

might as well add in Predator if we're going by this logic

I was trying to add a couple older movies like The Blob. Obviously it's cheesy from our standards, but was considered horror at the time. And obviously Night of the living dead. If anyone else has any good horror from much older days, definitely add them.

That's because Crazy, Stupid, Love would run away with that one and it would be a waste of time.

Just use the amount of nominations to determine if any given film is actually a horror film or action/crime etc. If the board thinks its horror, then it is.

My list:
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Creature From the Black Lagoon
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Psycho
Dracula
Tales From the Crypt
Don't Look Now
Jaws (edited to insert this one that scared the hell out of me as a kid)
Halloween
The Shining
An American Werewolf in London
Poltergeist
Silence of the Lambs
Ring/Ringu
Let the Right One In
28 Days Later

you say that, but much like March Madness, you can have a sneaker like Die Hard come and win.

It's a deserved W, but I was surprised it won.

i know i've gone on ad nauseum about it, but those are my favorite two "horror" movies and I watch all their dumb movies every time they come out.

i'll sit through a Scream or Halloween with my wife, but A&P are the only ones I like.
