If we are going by solely what happened on the island, then Penny wouldn't have been in the final scene.

Wow that Kimmel Q&A was a complete waste of 11 minutes

Throwing out a question:
If the ALT alone was Purgatory and we agree that purgatory is a place where people who have died somehow either atone for past sins/wrongs or move past their hangups or let go of whatever they need to let go of, Shouldn't it stand to reason that all of their growth, atonement, and letting go would have occured during the ALT and the ALT alone?
We didn't see that happen in the ALT. It all happened on the Island. In the ALT, they only became aware of past happenings on the island where the growth, atonement, etc... happened
its certainly a viable explanation to see it this way.
Other possible reasons:
--Jack's episode where he was in Thailand and got the tatoos "he walks among us but is not one of us". In this episode Jack is in Thailand and he meets Bai Ling who has a relationship with him and then gives him some kind of pychic reading where she flips out and then everyone else around her beat the crap out of Jack and make him leave. How was he not like them? Could he have been dead then? possible.
--Before going back into the magic waterfall Hurley tries to stop Jack and says he doesn't want him to die. Jack tells Hurley, "I'm already dead".
--Richard explained that they were all dead in Ab Aetorno, even though it came off as him being wrong, perhaps he actually had it right all along.
--Wallace.

well then we get into the whole, "what is the flash sideways" questions
quote:
the flash sideways wasn't real. the island was real
But then it would have introduced a big inconsistency in the flash-sideways. How is a newborn suddenly 3? How is an unborn baby automatically born at the snap of a finger? I got dollars to donuts that you would still be complaining.

Believe whatever you want to believe but ignore what Christian said to Jack and why Desmond needed to show all of them something.

Yeah but Hurley was just Hurley at that point.

"the island made it so" and/or "jacob's rules"
take your pick, i don't care. either work.

Yeah the one that Jack hulk-smashed for no apparent reason.

i made the transition from total purgatory to jack's purgatory this morning. i'm trying to catch up

I'm still going with a group collective purgatory, though I can certianly see how a private Jack purgatory makes sense.

I'm going strictly on the evidence.
Christian speech was directed to Jack - "You were important to their lives and they were important to you." This stands to reasons that what we see in the final scene is the manifestation of the characters as Jack remembers them.
Desmond having to show them all something has no bearing on this discussion.

No longer exist? What are you talking about?
The wreck happened.
They survived.
The actions on the show actually happened as explained by Christian.
The H-Bomb did nothing except send Jack and crew back to the present.
From there, the writers show us the lives of the losties after they die and are reunited, as explained by Christian.
Jack "saved eternal life" by preserving the island.
Jack died that we might be saved. Some of us just need a bit more time in purgatory to complete the process. :)

Hey, can you make me one with Jack closing his eye, Jack and Desmond meeting in the stadium, and any picture with Desmond and put "See you in another life, brotha" in it.
I would consider you the greatest poster of all-time if you did.

before this became THE debate, it's funny how i said it this morning as an aside, as it was making sense in my head at the time
i had no idea this bad writing would become the focal point
