Saw it’s going off Netflix soon and decided to give it a watch. (Yes I know I should have seen it earlier.) Man, it just blew me away for 2 and 1/2 hours. I’ve read Heart of Darkness, so I knew what to expect, but I was still on the edge of my seat. I now see why it was so highly reviewed. Definitely a classic! I was sad when Chef died because he was from New Orleans lol.

Then it probably made a lot more sense to you than it did for thousands of people who saw the movie first without reading Heart of Darkness.

It's a great movie. Haven't seen it in years, but maybe it's time to watch it again.

Give "Deer Hunter" a watch if you've never seen it. A great Vietnam movie that is a bit underrated imo. (It's not a film about the battlefield, but about some guys who came home).

Watched it again last year. Yes, it really was most excellent. The only thing that hasn't aged well at all is the weird 80s electronic sounds in the soundtrack. . It so dates it to a particular time, and just feels lame now.

Hopper was great in this.

He improvised his lines!

the added scenes dont add a whole lot other than time...the whole visit to the plantation is tedious and the extra scenes with the playboy bunnies (no spoilers) are pretty uncomfortable and lurid

the original cut is perfect just like it is

Had to. So F'ed up, he probably wouldn't have remembered his name.

This is one of only three movies that should hang in the Louvre.

Apocalypse now.
Godfather II

And........

That's right dumb and dumber.

I disagree. It does hurt pacing, no question, but the plantation scene provides a lot of context (comparing French investment/involvement vs. U.S.). The bunnies scenes are great to show how shallow and superficial "American" culture can be, relative to serious issues of life and death.

Yeah, that's part of the point - you get to a different level of understanding when you're "uncomfortable."
