None of that shite even mattered at the end of it.
Correct. The entire "secret" narrative arc of the entire enterprise (i.e. Snow is a Targaryen) was rendered absolutely irrelevant.

Just did me first rewatch of the whole thing.

The unsullied respawn after winterfell is still bizarre.

And of course the storytelling. Even if the books end up largely the same, at least in the books there’s a passage where a side character explains that prophesies are largely bullshite.

Wow what a ride. I know they left it up for interpretation with the open ending, but what a way to go out on top. Hell of a series.

No they didn’t

He really is to blame. I give him credit for creating that universe but it seems he didn’t know how to end it so he just quit. It’s a shame.

I’m very skeptical on anything else he puts out unless it’s complete

Season 8 still pisses me off just thinking about it. They literally ruined the greatest tv show of all time in 6 episodes.
This.

8 was an abomination, but the rest of the show is great. Even the uneven parts of 7, there were some great moments.

I really didn't like the last few seasons - none were as embarrassingly bad as season 8 - but it is like the season or two prior to 8 they were meandering and moving to slow (IMO of course) and then in 8 they just lighting fast threw shite at the wall to get it done.

Is there an acceptable and feasible point in GoT where a new viewer can stop at a satisfactory end prior to the smoldering derailment?

How about the Dothraki? D&D literally said in the post credits that charge was to signify the end of them. Yet there’s 100s of them 2 episodes later.

the entire last couple seasons are bizarre.

The fricking "plan" to go steal a white walker and bring him back to show Cersei was idiotic. In addition to the timing of how all that took place being off.

I remember people getting shite on if they criticized season 7 prior to season 8. Those two lazy writers (though the fat man is to blame as well) knew that shortening the season would reduce the quality. They’ve both written great episodes before so they knew what good writing was. So they focused on making the show look cool rather then focus on quality writing. That’s how you get episodes like Beyond the Wall. They just wanted to get the A-Team together while throwing in a zombie bear, the NK, and some dragons.

There were some high points in S8 IMO though (Hound/Mountain for example), but a lot of it was so rushed and stupid, and some of the plots just made zero sense after what was being built for 7+ seasons. That was my problem with it.

That, and the magic portals everyone used to travel in S7 and S8. That was annoying as frick. It took some people full seasons (or more) to get from one place to another, and then all of a sudden people were WALKING the length of the continent in a matter of hours.

The biggest problem is trying to squeeze what could have been 3 seasons in to that final season.

Yup, everything felt super rushed. To the point where it was distracting.

I mean, you waiting seven seasons of Dany dicking around to finally get to Westeros, and then you try to cram every single thing you could think of in that last season? GTFO.

On first watch I agreed with most of what's been said on this thread. And while everything was too rushed in Season 8, I did enjoy watching it the second go round.

Would love to see a sequel with Arya kicking arse in the part of the world where no one has ever gone before...

The greatest show I ever watched only to watch the last season frick it all up. Da fuq man. It went out with a whimper. The night king, Jon Snow, the lanasters, the starks, etc. Some of the greatest characters ever written and the time they used in the series to let you get attached to them and here comes the last season to say "fuk you" viewers.
