Over the years I’ve seen portions of all three films, but this was the first time that I watched the trilogy in its entirety. I see now why people say LOTR is so much better than The Hobbit. I enjoyed The Hobbit trilogy, but it isn’t even in the same universe as LOTR.

Speaking of the movie universe, I completely agree.

But, The Hobbit, is one of the greatest books ever written.

I watch the trilogy every year.

I had the set of 3 separate films with lots of extras for each film, but the standard movie release. I bought the blu-ray 3 years ago with the extended films and all the features of the other DVDs.

It is the greatest trilogy ever put on film.

in more ways than one.

Not only is it vastly superior as a series of films, but The Hobbit made changes that broke the LOTR lore. For example- everyone, including the Wise, had basically forgotten about Sauron by Bilbo's birthday party.

There had been a semblance of peace for centuries, overall, in Middle Earth. Sure, Angmar was under the Witch King, but he was not openly known to be a Nazgul. He was assumed to be a rogue Dunedain, in opposition to what little Arnor still held. And they had left.

The taking of Minas Ithil was fairly recent, and of originally unknown means. Again, wasn't clearly linked to the Nazgul at that point. Wasn't until they declared openly for Mordor that it was revealed, and then people understood it was the Witch King still, now working on Gondor, but that was still united (whereas Arnor was Balkanized).

The Necromancer of Dol Guldur was suspected to be a man, and originally didn't get the attention of the White Council until Gandalf convinced him. That meant he was under the radar.

Sauron openly declaring in Mordor and rebuilding the Dark Tower was supposed to be recent, and a shock.

Think The Hobbit series could have been better with a more .... charismatic? ... Thoren.

I was older when I first read it, and it felt like a long kid’s book. Somewhat of a chore to get through.

Back in that time, Pete Jackson couldn't rely on CGI to display his story. So he was able to create this beautiful world that felt more real. It was complemented by CGI, but not created from it.

That's just one reason of a LONG list of reasons why LOTR was a much better trilogy.

Maybe a bit, but bad cgi absolutely murdered those movies

I do wonder ocassionaly if the LotR would have been better with Sean Connery and Russell Crowe, but the actor that played Gandalf (name escapes me at the moment) and Vigo Morrtisson gave great performances so it doesn't really matter I guess

I was fortunate enough to read the original books the way they were, I think, intended. When I was a kid I ran across The Hobbit in the library. I had no idea what it was, but the cover intrigued me, so I checked it out and had my mind blown. Read and reread it time after time. As far as I knew, that’s where the story ended. LOTR was not kept in the kids’ section of the library, and I wasn’t allowed to get books out of the adult area - and of course there was no Internet, and geek culture was still decidedly underground, so Tolkien’s work wasn’t as well-known as it is now.

A few years later, when I was probably twelve or thirteen, I finally found out that not only had the man who wrote The Hobbit written more books, but they were a continuation of that story with many of the same characters. My mind was, once again, blown.

Yep. I was in NZ seven years ago when they were still filming parts of the hobbit. LOTR filmed all over both islands of NZ and became this national source of pride for them. Like you said they were out in the countryside filming lots of it and it also helped local towns economies. The hobbit movies were largely filmed in Wellington in the studios that had sprung up since. Lots of green screens and a lot less filming around than he country.

I definitely can’t see anyone else as Aragorn.

One of the other big ones is that LOTR had a ton of source material. The Hobbit was 304 pages, and each of the 3 LOTR books was longer individually.

To do multiple movies, you need a story that can handle it. The Hobbit is a great story, but it stretches thin over a trilogy. LOTR has the depth of story to be a trilogy.
