Hamm’s ability to do both insanely cool and goofy as frick is pretty impressive.

Jon Hamm has somehow managed to look exactly 43 for like, 20 years....including early Mad Men when he was actually in his 30’s. He claims he could never get parts when he was younger because he looked to old.

Happens a lot.

I mean even in the French Connection, gene hackman looks like a middle aged man. And he played the same type of roles for another 30 years

Roger Sterling being there seals it for me.

It won't work. Fletch wasn't great because of the story or even the characters. It's just Chevy Chase being a smartass for 2 hours.

Its totally an SNL persona driven movie, the story is pedestrian...minus the Afro.

I mean Fletch is Chase, and Ham can't do Chase so they're just using the name to sell a different movie.

I think Hamm would have made a great live-action Archer a decade ago.

This.

I like Hamm. I think his comedic timing is really underrated. He's a funny guy. But he's not Fletch.

Chase took his goofy SNL persona and made Fletch in the same fashion. Hamm got his big break playing an ultra-serious Don Draper. So even though Hamm can be funny, it's hard to picture him in trailer as more than Don Draper trying to be funny.

In other words, I think Hamm in supporting comedic roles is great...but he can't carry a film in that role.

Ehhhhhhhhhh.

That wasn't Fletch. Why even use the name?

Fletch: (flirting) Hey Betty, how about lunch at the In N' Out Burger?
Betty Dilworth: (disgusted) No.
Fletch: Okay, forget the burger, how about just the In N' Out?
(she sneers at him)
Fletch: Ok, how about just the In?

You do know that the Fletch novels pre-date the Chevy Chase movie by 11 years and that just because Chevy Chase has been the only on-screen performance of Fletch, Chase's interpretation may not be the only valid interpretation of the character?

Edit: I hold out final judgment on Hamm's version of the character, but I'm not going to out-and-out dismiss without seeing it just because he doesn't do the dialed all the way to 11 sarcastic version that Chase did.

Curious if they will go serious with this, considering Hamm is much better with drama than comedy (though he can be a funny guy). He is made for neo-noir. He will just play Don Draper as a detective.

Keeping Up With the Joneses was really good and had phenomenal female talent.

I've never heard anyone say KUWTJ was really good ... the script was for sure and the female talent was as you say, phenomenal. Gal and Hamm made everyone seem less attractive on set.

Greg Mottola directed that as well, so I trust this Fletch material in his hands.

"I'll take a steak sandwich and a steak sandwich"

"Put it on the Underhill's bill"

Classic movie!

If there’s 11 books, then there’s plenty of material to make a sequel to the originals.

And Hamm is a better actor than Chase, so it will be a different take.

Fletch Lives is one of my all-time favorites. I don't think a lot of it would fly in today's climate, though.

I had no idea Fletch was based on a series of books. Is Fletch Lives one of them? I'd read the shite out of that.

That’s great casting, actually. Jon Hamm has excellent comedic timing and has the whole trying to be cool and aloof yet clumsy, befuddled, and charming routine down pat.
he basically played that in 30 Rock

I like Hamm. I think he is great at what he does. He does have a certain instinct for comedy.

However, he is not a comedic actor, IMHO, and unless I've just missed an entire aspect of his work, he cannot do what Chevy did to make that role and film iconic.

Who can? Chevy is a generational talent. That is the problem with remakes or reboots (see Vacation). There will never be another Chase, Aykroyd, Murray, Ramis (most underappreciated of his era), etc. We were lucky to have experienced this group.
