Yeah sorry if I didn't see it that way, I was making a lot of replies

I was down there on and off for quite a while working. Terrible situation obviously, but I had a blast working on that relief work.

My aunt and uncle ended up letting a JW couple set up their trailer in their yard for about year or so. They were nice people. He was an electrician and was employed part time by my uncle rewiring their house. He spent the rest of his time working for free for people who couldn't afford to hire an electrician. His wife handled about 95% of the door knocking duties in their family.

I would actually be pretty cool with this one.

Birthdays are for children and women.

2) bible evidence pretty much tells us that jesus was not born on December 25th or even close to it really. Luke 2:8 "There were also in the same region shepherds living out of doors and keeping watch in the night over their flocks". So the shepherds were keeping watch over their flock at night really suggests that jesus was probably born in the summer, maybe the fall. In December it would have been typical for shepherds in judea to keep their flocks under cover at night by of typically bad weather.

I have the same problem with religious people assigning their own values to the Bible as I do atheists. The weather in December in Judea is usually in the 50s, with rarely any snow, about 3" of rain for the month, and 12 hours of daylight. About the same as Mexico City. So yes, you could be outside tending sheep

And as far as it being a pagan thing, you have to understand that if man was indeed created, then those same pagan dates possibly evolved from the first religion. Their meanings would have changed based on time, distance, and culture. Just as JWs aren't the same as Catholics, even though their founder is the same entity

Its just not simply a coincidence that many celebrations take place at that time: Buddhists (Day of Enlightenment), Christians (Christmas), Hindu (Ganesh), Romans (Saturnalia), Judaism (Hanukah), Pagans (Yule), Afrikaners (Kwanzaa), Hopi (Soyal), even Muslims at times (Ramadan) have major celebrations in December around solstice

You know, you may be right because it was like "their" bible, an LDS bible. Are LDS, Mormons, and JW all completely different religions?

I'm Catholic and we believe in some nutty shite. However, there's over a billion of us, so it's accepted as being more mainstream.

Serious question: Why are the churches/temples built with similar bricks and have no windows? I see them in SWLA and they all look the same.

The veneer of History and being about the only uniting force to help Europe focus on resisting Muslim aggression long enough for the Ottomans to lose steam helps Catholicism's case.

But with the public paper trails for Mormons and the Bible Study Movements it makes easy targets for calling out the conmen.

There's also the JW child abuse cases which are just as awful as the Bishop's shuffling priests.

It's a bad scene and the court cases and ex-jws are shining the light on it too.

Regardless JW is about living in the End Times. Since 1880. They've made several Doomsday dates. They've walked it back. And they broke the rule of only God knows when, no man will.

Gospels and shite, yo, God ain't telling you nothing.

Bible so awesome it came with a clear cut way to say, "Fraud!". Because if anyone speaks of the next time around like they have a direct conduit. That's what the Bible tells us they are.

And before JW walked it back, they were certain as a radio host fleecing money from rubes today.

So what's the difference between Harold Camping and Charles Russell when we can hold up

quote:

Russell believed that Christ had returned invisibly in October 1874, and that he had been ruling from heaven since that date. He believed that a 'time of trouble' began then that would mark a gradual deterioration of civilized society leading up to the end of the "Gentile Times" with a climactic multi-national attack on a restored Israel, worldwide anarchy, and the sudden destruction of all world governments in October 1914. After the outbreak of World War I, Russell reinterpreted 1914 as the beginning of Armageddon.

As the same damn thing.

They are different all over really. In certain areas many will look the same bc you can order building materials in bulk and it's more cost effective and more efficient with building.

Growing up I wondered about the windows too bc the one I went too didn't have any. But as I got older and started traveling/vacationing and I'd go visit a kingdom hall (church) and there are plenty that have them. I was in el Salvador and went to one and it was like %75 glass. So it just depends on the area really.

Also, people are jerks, and honestly people would throw stuff and bust out the windows. There are videos on YouTube that show it happening. In Russia, its really hard being a JW. Theres pretty bad persecution, physical assault, and now they are banned and cant even go to church. If a witness were found with a bible, it doesnt matter what kind, even a king james, they would probably be thrown in jail. It would be fine for other religions to have one, not a JW though.

Even though here there are some people that are pretty rude, it still is the south and in the bible belt, most people very receptive, so I cant complain.

That's off on a number of things.

I'm on my phone and busy at work but one thing is that JW have never given a date. There was a time in the 70s, I wasnt around then, that they hinted it was really close, but they never gave a date. Like you say, the scriptures are pretty clear that no one knows the date except for god.

So that part isn't true. The Watchtower is produced monthly and never have they mention a date/day/month. And we dont even talk of a doomsday.

Child abuse is a touchy subject, and just so I'm not taken wrong, but it happens in every religion. Theres not a way to know but I'd be confident of there were that of whatever prominent religion there is, per capita, JW are way down on the list of how many times it's happened.

And for example, if two random JW in California found out about a child abuse case, and they didn't handle it properly and go to the proper authorities, they are in the wrong and should be treated/tried just like anybody else. Nobody is saying they weren't in the wrong but that doesnt necessarily mean they were trying to hide it, they just were dumb for not handling it the right way. I read a story about that happening and my reaction was just like every other witness I know and thought "jesus dude, if there was any indication of abuse, just go to the police."

It's too bad we don't live in an age where you can pull up information on a screen in your hand or desk. Where some of these pages cite their information and you can easily check references.

Oh wait. We totally can.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Taze_Russell

So, c'mon pull the other leg.

while we are having a fun conversation about religion, i remember growing up in Lake Charles and we always had 1 or 2 Pentecostal kids who would turn their desks when we would watch a video.

They also just wore LONG arse skirts and never make up.

Am i dreaming this or was this real? if so, why? and does it still go on?

I'm no JW, but this seems pretty contradictory

I didn't mock anyone. Just pointing out people attacking, but then stating they have no clue, along with others with false information and someone just along for the ride which I find pretty funny.

Always amused by religious ineptness. So congrats on that.
