I generally like the idea of following a black 00, but I'm not sure I like the idea of a black James Bond. Seems like they're trying too hard to fit a particular social narrative rather than tell a story. But I think there's huge symbolism in having a black James Bond and so the studio will want to capitalize on that, damn the integrity of the material. And frankly, the integrity of the material has already been pretty well eroded. So I don't have THAT big of an issue with it. And I have zero issue with a black 00.
That said, irrespective of whether they name this guy James Bond or something else entirely, Elba is only 4 years younger than Craig. I like him as an actor, but they need to bring in a younger guy. This has been discussed on here before.
Oyelowo, Ejiafor... frick, go with Boyega and pass the baton. That guy is only 26. He's gotten better as an actor and could carry the franchise for a generation. Elba has 1, maybe 2 movies in him before he's in a walker after trying to do a stunt.

When the "Black Bond" film tanks in every market but USA and maybe UK, domestic moviegoers will be blamed for racism, and every other - ism.
When tbe returns show the film down 200 percent in China from the last Bond film, not a peep will be uttered...then they will continue to see a downfall, as far as Box office returns, from Bond films...
Then they will blame domestic moviegoers again and not shine the light on themselves once they figure out they're stuck with with their decision for a 5 picture deal.
It will be Star Wars demise all over again.
I love Elba, but he has certainly not shown the ability to carry a major, big budget studio picture.
Why not he and Fuqua just start make him another Mi6 secret agent while Bond is away or something, then they can have the actual new Bond and Elba tesm up in a couple of pictures and make a very badass movie.

agreed, they should have just created a new 00 character that they can go more places with the character
i like a black 00 but it needs to make sense, james bond was set in a certain time period, even though as its already been pointed out, they abandoned the core of what his character was based on many years ago

I'll tell you one reason as to why he's not the best actor. He's already too old. By the time Craig hangs it up after Bond 25 next year and Elba is hypothetically cast in the role in 2020, he will be 48 years old. Factor in the time it takes to make the film, he will be about 50 by the time his first film is released in theaters.
For comparison, the oldest actor ever cast for the role of James Bond was Roger Moore at the age of 44. Daniel Craig was 37 when he was cast. Pierce Brosnan decided not to reappear as James Bond after Die Another Day because he was approaching 50 and remembered how the press and fans alike had criticized Roger Moore for playing Bond until he was 58.
So yeah, while Idris Elba has the charm, is hella suave, and is not running short on charisma.....he is just too old to play Bond.

Henry Cavill would be perfect for the role IMHO. He's 35 years old, English, is the right height, and has the charm, suaveness, and looks for the part. The man just oozes cool.
He'd be a much better fit than Idris Elba who, as I have said before, is just too old for the part.

If Bond had been written as a black man I would be making just as much of a fuss about this if the tables were turned and people were saying it was time for the character to be played by a white actor. The character was written in the novels as caucasian and he's been played in the movies by caucasian actors for well over 50 years now. Sue me if I'm a fan of continuity and tradition.
That being said, Idris Elba's skin color does not bother me as much as his age does. He'll be 50 by the time his first film is released and will be good for three movies at most. Why cast an actor who has such a limited shelf-life as Bond?
