Have you read the books? They're not that good, although Bond is a vivid character.

I've actually got a great scenario for a transition to Elba. MI6 is devastated by a terror attack. Virtually all senior officers and leadership wiped out in one blow. Whitehall has no choice but to call James Bond (Sean Connery) out of his forced retirement in the tropics to take over the role of M. This leads to his eventual rapprochement with his estranged son by the chick from Live and Let Die. (Played by Idris Elba of course.)

F*ck this. If that happens, I'm done with the movie franchise and will stick to the books until they screw that up as well.

I really cannot comprehend why this is such a difficult concept. James Bond is a Scottish white man. If you want to make a black 00 agent, cool, I'm all for it. But don't shoehorn him into an established literary/cinematic character just because. You've already made Felix Leiter and Moneypenny black. That's enough.

James Bond is not a code name. There is a Bond family crest. He has an ancestral home. 007 is a code name. Want to make a black 007? That's fine. Just don't pretend he's James Bond. He can be a different character with that designation. That simply means James Bond either retired or died.

That's an excellent point.

Additionally, if they're going to change the race of an english fictional character from white to another race, then it shouldn't be black. It shoud be changed to indian. Dot, not feather.

I'm not offended or triggered. It's just ridiculous that a white character needs to be made into a black character just because. The talk of Idris being Bond has been around for several years now. People who cannot grasp the concept that James Bond is a Scottish white guy are just willfully ignorant at this point, similar to the idiots who refuse to understand that LSU Athletics is self-sustaining and doesn't receive money from the university.

I have. They're different for sure, and like the movies they reflect Bond in various eras. Let's not pretend like all of the Bond films have been cinematic masterpieces either.

I’m always amazed at how offended people get at the idea of a black version of a fictional character

When a black actor is cast in a traditionally white role, it's breaking through a glass ceiling. If a white actor were to ever be cast in a traditionally black role, it would immediately be seen as racist and as cultural appropriation. The movie would never get made or the actor would have to drop out due to threats and criticism.

But that's beside the point. The point is they are looking to cast a black man for the role of James Bond simply because he is black. I think that's stupid and I also think it wreaks of racism. But that's just me.

Oh, I was just talking about the Fleming books. They were entertaining but pretty pulpy.

I watched The Wire's original run with no clue that Elba was British. The first time I heard him speak with a British the thought occurred to me that he would be a great Bond. I don't see any need to have a black Bond, just a guy who would do it well. Making Elba Connery's son would actually restore a great deal of continuity to the Bond universe.

Idris Elba was born and raised in London.

When a black actor is cast in a traditionally white role, this board whines and moans about it being an outrage and omg it can’t be done

When a white actor is cast in a black role, people complain about whitewashing and appropriation and all that garbage

How do you not see you are pulling on the same rope in that tug of war?

Sounds like they are looking to hire Idris because he’s a frickin perfect fit for the role. Think they may have missed the window on him because of his age, but he would make a hell of a bond

People aren't offended by race just by lack of authenticity. Authenticity is the character and the actor who embodies the characteristics regardless of race.

Like, nobody wants Kevin James or Kevin Hart. That has nothing to do with race.

We want the novels.

A man who lost his wife and became a hard drinking womanizer and lives in reckless disregard for his life because of it - and drinks and beds every woman because he just doesn't give a shite anymore...and eases the pain that way. That's the Bond in the novels. It takes a right black guy to pull that off just like it takes a right white guy to pull that off.

All we care about is good casting regardless - casting based on the novels - those characteristics. Not to change the character.

Race doesn't change the character...the people who inhabit the character can change it.

Sounds like a perfect role for Elba

If that's what we want then Tom Hiddleston is the obvious choice. He's a facial scar away from being almost the exact description that Fleming wrote

quote:

In the novels (notably From Russia, with Love), Bond's physical description has generally been consistent: slim build; a three-inch long, thin vertical scar on his right cheek; blue-grey eyes; a "cruel" mouth; short, black hair, a comma of which falls on his forehead. Physically he is described as 183 centimetres (6 feet) in height and 76 kilograms (168 lb) in weight.

Yeah, that was my reaction too. I don't get a negative reaction to Elba, this seems 100% up his alley.

He can pull off a hard edged womanizer better than just about any other actor out there. Every actor molds the role to some extent. Elba can nail all the esssential personality traits of Bond.

Key phrase right here. This board is by no means representative of the majority.

In this you are correct.

quote:

How do you not see you are pulling on the same rope in that tug of war?

Because I'm not. My argument against anyone other than a white actor is strictly continuity based.

quote:

Think they may have missed the window on him because of his age

They have DEFINITELY missed the window on him because of his age. Craig is already looking too old for Bond and he's about the same age now as Idris will be when he finally starts shooting his first Bond film.

This.

It felt like the running theme in these Craig Bond films was that he was aging out of the spy game. I also wasn't a big fan of the Craig Bond films being direct sequels to the previous one. The Craig films will have lasted nearly 20 years by the time Elba actually puts the tuxedo on for the first time. Elba is 45 years old right now.

Russel Crowe as Noah in "Noah"
Ben Affleck as Antonio J. Mendez in "Argo"
Pretty much everyone in the terrible "Avatar the last Airbender" movie
Johnny Depp as Tonto in the Lone Ranger
Christian Bale as Moses in "Exodus: Gods and Kings"
Jake Gyllenhall as Dastan in "Prince of Persia"
Liam Neeson as Ra's Al Ghul in "Batman Begins" and "Dark Knight Rises"
Carey Mulligan as Irene in "Driver"

Those are just recent ones. Aside from Batman Begins the rest are within the last 10 years. So I'm not quite sure what you mean by "The movie would never get made......"
